A third citizen from Canada has now been detained in the country of China as confirmed by a report published Wednesday on the Canada National Post. Hua Chunying, the spokeswomen for foreign ministry at China told during a briefing held at Beijing that the proceedings of the report were not known to her.
Two citizens from Canada namely Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig, who were a businessman and former diplomat respectively, were detained. This happened after the Canadian police went on to arrest the Meng Wanzhou, the Chief Financial Officer for Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd on 1st December.
Canada’s office for Global Affairs stated that they knew about the detention but no details or connection was suggested with regards to the detention of Meng. The newspaper failed to identify the 3rd paerson that was detained. However, a hidden source mentioned that this 3rd individual who was arrested was neither an entrepreneur nor a diplomat.
The Beijing embassy for Canada did not respond to the email request for commentary on this report. The government of Canada also stated that no connection has been established between detention of Spavor and Kovrig with Meng’s arrest. The U.S. prosecutors now accuse Meng for misleading the multinational banks regarding the Iran-linked transactions.
