The Supreme Court of Spain has sentenced nine of the twelve Catalan leaders to a minimum of nine years in jail in connection with the 2017 independence bid.

The nine, including former Catalonian vice president Oriol Junqueras, were accused of sedition in the failed bid for Catalan independence. The leaders attempted to secede from Spain, triggering a major political crisis that saw Spanish authorities deploy hundreds of police to quell the unrest.

The prosecution had sought up to twenty-five-year sentences for the Junqueras, who was found guilty of misuse of public funds and sedition.

All the twelve defendants were acquitted of the charge of rebellion. Three were found guilty only of disobedience and not sentenced to jail. However, they received a nominal ban from running or participating in public office.

Carles Puigdemont, the former head of Catalonia’s regional government, reacted to the landmark ruling terming it an “atrocity.” Puigdemont fled the country and has been in a self-imposed exile in Belgium.

Wrongful death and personal injury attorney Arin Khodaverdian, President and Managing Partner of Alpine Law Group, urges accidents victims and their families to immediately seek legal assistance. “Those who are affected by tragedy have rights, but they must act quickly in order to preserve those rights to the full extent of the law. Often, swift action by an experienced attorney is imperative in order to preserve evidence, interview witnesses and immediately begin pursuing any and all responsible parties.”

While Mr. Khodaverdian does not represent any of the parties involved in this incident, he has recovered over $100 million for thousands of injury victims and their families. “In one case, we were able to recover a 7-figure settlement within 11 business days of being hired by the family of a victim killed by a negligent driver. While this result is atypical and does not predict future outcomes, justice in this case help bring about closure and a swift sense of justice for the family.”
