India has converted hundreds of trains and sports stadiums into hospitals and quarantine centers ahead of an anticipated surge in coronavirus cases.
Indian Railways has begun modifying more than 20,000 carriages into medical facilities. Each carriage has a bed capacity of 16.
The Indian government announced a national lockdown a week ago with more than 1.3 billion being ordered to stay at home.
The country has since reported 1,637 infections and 38 deaths from the virus.
Sports stadiums have also been converted into temporary hospitals. New Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, the Gachibowli stadium and the Sarusajai stadium will be used as isolation and treatment centers.
