A major clean-up operation is underway in Yemen after a heavy downpour that resulted in flooding in many parts of the country.

Floodwaters swept through the rebel-held capital of Sanaa, overturning cars and damaging shops and market stalls. The rains began on Monday evening and continued through to Wednesday.

Although no casualties were reported, the authorities said many stall owners lost everything and are now unable to make a living.

The city is located in the country’s mountainous north and is prone to flash floods.

There are fears that the flooding could mean problems to the country’s already-overwhelmed sanitation system. More rains are forecast over the next few days across Yemen.
