Dozens of people are feared dead after a gold mine collapsed at Grand Cape Mount county in western Liberia on Tuesday, the authorities.

The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) initially confirmed that two people were killed in the incident but later said the death toll could be higher.

“Fourteen persons ranging from ages 20 to 28 visited a mine site overnight to illegally dig gravel believed to contain gold. Four of them were entrapped leaving two dead and two injured,” the NDMA said in a statement.

The county mayor later told state radio that at least sixty people were missing.

The internal affairs ministry officials and some officials of the lands, mine and energy have visited the area but could not be reached for comments.
