At least nine people died and more than 300 others were hospitalized following a chemical leak at a chemicals plant in India on Thursday, the authorities said.
An Assistant Commissioner of Police in Visakhapatnam said another 1,500 people in the area have been evacuated to a neighboring village.
Footage on Indian television channels showed several people including women and children lying motionless in the streets of Visakhapatnam on the east coast of India.
The police said styrene leaked from the plant early in the morning when most of the people in the surrounding villages were asleep.
The chemicals plant, owned by South Korean battery maker LG Chemical Ltd, had just been reopened a few days after India relaxed the nationwide lockdown.
The plant said the leak had been brought under control.
