Seven men have been sentenced to jail by a Honduras court following the murder of an environmental activist in 2016. Berta Caceres was shot dead at her home in the town of La Esperanza.

Seven suspects were arrested in connection with the murder that triggered international outrage.

Caceres was a land rights activist and was very vocal in protesting against illegal logging in the country. She is remembered for organizing a protest against the construction of the $50m Agua Zarca hydroelectric dam on the Gualcarque River.

The court sentenced five of the suspects to 50 years in jail while two other suspects were sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Among those convicted were an employee of the Honduran project operator Desarrollos Energeticos (DESA), a retired army officer who was a DESA employee and an active-duty military officer.

DESA had awarded the dam construction contract to Chinese state-owned Sinohydro.
