At least 52 people were killed by an armed group in an attack on a village in northern Mozambique on April 7.

According to a report by the police, the victims were killed after the youth failed to join the group that was forcefully attempting to recruit them. “The criminals tried to recruit young people to join their ranks, but there was resistance on the part of the youths. This provoked the anger of the criminals, who indiscriminately killed – cruelly and diabolically – 52 young people,” a police spokesperson said.

The massacre happened in the village of Xitaxi in Muidumbe district. The police are pursuing the group.

Armed groups have stepped up attacks in the region as part of their efforts to establish an Islamic kingdom. For the past two years, the group has been targeting village, killing more than 700 people.

According to a report by Doctors Without Borders (MSF), the attacks have displaced more than 200,000 people.
