At least 50 people were killed in a Bamdit attack in Northern Nigeria on Sunday, local officials said.

A group of more than 100 armed men stormed into the villages of Minda, Zareyawa and Kerawa in the Kaduna state early Sunday morning.

The assailants stole cattle and looted homes while setting several houses on fire.

Among those killed in the attack were worshippers who were attending morning prayers at a local mosque.

A legislator in the Nigerian parliament confirmed that 50 bodies had been recovered. However, he expressed fears that the death toll could rise since several people were unaccounted for.

Several wounded people are currently receiving treatment in local hospitals.
