Three people were killed and 179 others were injured after a plane crashed in Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen International Airport on Wednesday.

Turkish authorities said the plane was flying into the airport when it skidded off the runway and broke into three pieces.

The Transportation Ministry said the “hard landing” was likely caused by strong winds and heavy rain.

Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya said the plane failed to “hold onto the runway” and skidded about 54-64 yards before crashing into a ditch.

The Boeing 737 operated by Turkish Pegasus Airlines was flying into the city from the Aegean port city of Izmi.
