At least twenty four Afghan police officers and soldiers were killed in an attack when six police infiltrators opened fire on them while they were asleep at a base in southern Afghanistan on Friday.
According to a report by the Zabul province governor’s office, the attack happened at the headquarters of a joint operation near Qalat, the capital of the southern province.
Four other Afghan security forces are still missing. The attackers, believed to be Taliban insurgents, fled in two military Humvee vehicles, along with a pickup truck, weapons and ammunition. Councillor Asadullah Kakar put the number of attackers at eight.
The attack happened despite the Taliban having signed a peace deal with the United States in the Qatari capital, Doha. Part of the agreement included the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
