At least 23 people died after a truck carrying migrant workers crashed northern India, the authorities said in a statement. The workers were mainly from the states of Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
Another 35 people were injured after a vehicle they were traveling in crashed into a parked truck on a highway near a roadside eatery in the Auraiya district of Uttar Pradesh state. Several people were in critical condition and were transported to the hospital.
Thousands of migrant workers have been walking home from Indian cities after losing their jobs because of nationwide lockdown.
The government declared a nationwide lockdown in an attempt to stop the spread of coronavirus forcing many workers to travel on foot due to the little public transport.
