Two people were killed in a knife attack in the south-east French town of Romans-sur-Isère on Saturday morning, the authorities reported.

Witnesses said a man wielding a knife entered a tobacconist and stabbed a customer and the owners of the shop before attacking more people in a nearby butcher’s shop.

Although the identity of the attacker and the motive of the attack were not immediately established, French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said the National Counter-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office will investigate whether the attacker acted alone.

Five other people were wounded in the attack. One of the wounded was in critical condition.

Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron has condemned the terming it an “odious” incident that further saddened a country already going through an ordeal.
