Two people were killed in a car-bomb explosion in Baghdad, Iraq, on Friday night.

According to a report by the local authorities, the improvised explosive device that had been placed underneath a vehicle went off killing two and leaving twelve other people wounded.

The explosion was the first such incident since the eruption of anti-government protests in the country early October.

The authorities did not immediately establish if the explosion targeted demonstrators in the city’s Tayaran Square and Tahrir Square.

Altercations between Iraqi security forces and protestors were reported in central Baghdad on Friday. At least three people were killed and 25 others were wounded after the police fired live rounds to disperse the protestors.

The authorities had to set up a barrier to prevent the protestors from crossing the bridge into the Green Zone where government buildings and foreign embassies sit.
