Two patients in Beijing have been diagnosed with the rare pneumonic plague, the local authorities reported. The disease is highly contagious and can trigger severe epidemics through person-to-person contact and can prove fatal in 24 to 72 hours.

The two patients are from Inner Mongolia province and were being treated at a central hospital in Beijing. The authorities said, “relevant prevention and control measures have been implemented.”

Although the Chinese government did not immediately comment on the incident, the WHO said it had been notified about the case.

“The [Chinese] National Health Commission are implementing efforts to contain and treat the identified cases and increasing surveillance,” the coordinator at WHO China said.
