Thirteen children died after a fire broke out at an orphanage in Port Au Prince, Haiti, on Friday.
The Orphanage of the Church of Bible Understanding is run by an American religious non-profit organization.
Haiti’s chief of child protection for UNICEF said seven of those killed in the blaze were infants or toddlers, while six were aged between six or seven years.
The cause of the fire was not immediately established. However, it is alleged that candles were being used at the institution after a generator failed.
More than 60 children escaped unharmed.
Haiti’s President Jovenel Moise sent his condolences and directed officials to “adopt urgent measures” to determine the cause of the fire.
