President Trump Fires Watchdog Who Triggered His Impeachment
President Donald Trump abruptly fired the intelligence community inspector general Friday, an independent watchdog who handled the whistleblower complaint that led to the impeachment process.
Trump informed the Senate intelligence committee late Friday about his decision to fire Michael Atkinson.
Atkinson handled the whistleblower complaint which triggered the impeachment of President Trump last year.
His firing brings Trump’s impeachment back into the spotlight as his administration focuses on the high spread of coronavirus. As Trump removed Atkinson, the number of US coronavirus deaths rose to 7,000.
In a letter, President Trump stated that it was vital that he had confidence in the appointees who served as inspectors general. He added that he would nominate a person who has his full confidence at a later date.
