Milwaukee Airport:General Mitchell International Airport Closed – Thunderstorms and rain have closed General Mitchell International Airport. The airfield was reportedly flooded, which made it impossible for planes to safely land and take off from the air strip. Travelers should get into contact with their airline to make sure that their flight is not canceled before heading to the airport.
The control tower was evacuated on Thursday due to a tornado warning that was issued in the area. There were dozens of flights that were delayed, and dozens of other flights that were forced to land at other nearby airports. The airport as a whole was shut down for a period of time when the storm was at its strongest point.
The severe weather is nearly record-breaking in the region. Milwaukee is known for having inclement weather but the recent torrential downpours that they have seen have eclipsed any previous storms.
“DUE TO FLOODING ON THE AIRFIELD AND ROADWAYS LEADING TO THE AIRPORT, MITCHELL AIRPORT IS CLOSED UNTIL AT LEAST NOON, FRIDAY,” the airport announced on their website.
As soon as the storm ends, the airport should be back to being fully operational. If you were planning on traveling out of General Mitchell International Airport this weekend, you should check with your airline to ensure that your flight has not been delayed, postponed or canceled.
