Man who Surrendered Baby after Police Pursuit Charged with Child Abuse

A man was charged Thursday after he led police on a chase across central Los Angeles with an infant in his car.

29-year-old Michael Callender was charged with three felonies, including assault with a deadly weapon which was a car, child abuse under conditions that could cause great bodily injury or death, and fleeing a pursuing peace officer’s motor vehicle while driving recklessly.

According to the authorities, Callender was also accused of misdemeanor domestic battery.

Callender faced the charges after an incident that happened Tuesday, where he allegedly used his silver Toyota Prius to attack sheriff’s deputies who were seeking him for suspected spousal assault.

Officers started pursuing Callender shortly before 9 p.m. in East L.A., where he got on the 10 Freeway and headed west. The Prius exited at Crenshaw Boulevard but became disabled a short time later outside a Chevron station in the West Adams neighborhood.

Callender emerged from the car, holding a baby who was 11 months old. The infant later was reunited with their mother.

Authorities were continuing investigation into the incident.
