Last COVID-19 Patient Discharged, Ship to Leave New York by End Month
The USNS Comfort discharged its last coronavirus patient Sunday and was expected to go back to Virginia by the end of the month.
The only remaining patient aboard the floating military hospital was released, but it was not yet clear whether they would be moved to another hospital or discharged from treatment altogether.
The 1,000-bed hospital ship was deployed March 30 to New York to care for patients without coronavirus, but it later switched and began to accept patients with the virus as several hospitals were overwhelmed.
As of Saturday, the ship had treated 182 patients, and only one patient was left on the ship late Saturday.
The Comfort was expected to leave for its homeport in Norfolk, and Pentagon Spokesman Jonathan Hoffman stated that the ship’s departure was a sign of modest progress in mitigating the virus.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo stated that the state’s overall number of daily coronavirus deaths had fallen below 400 for the first time in April.
