Koran Burning: Terry Jones Burn A Quran Day Not Cancelled

Koran Burning: Terry Jones Burn A Quran Day Not Cancelled – General Petraeus has warned that Terry Jones’ national burning of the Quran could lead to the death of dozens of American troops. The same extremists that the church claims to be sending a message to are the ones that Petraeus warns about. He stated that the burning of the Muslim holy book “would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan, and around the world, to inflame public opinion and incite violence.”

These sentiments have been shared by a number of officials in the US. Terry Jones, the pastor behind the burning of the holy Quran, has come under fire after calling for Christians to burn the book in a “showing of religious tolerance.” Although his actions might be a direct contradiction to the words he is preaching, Jones does not seem to see the irony in his statement.

The burning of the Quran would undoubtedly anger extremists in the Middle East, who would see the gesture as a slap in the face. It is wrong for Jones to try to drum up support for his church through the burning of another religion’s holy scripts.

In 2005, riots ensued after a report by Newsweek claimed that a Pentagon investigation uncovered that military interrogators tried to flush the Quran down a toilet to anger those they were interrogating.

Then, in 2005, a Danish newspaper printed cartoons that portrayed the Prophet Muhammad, who is never supposed to be depicted, further escalating the situation. The burning of the book would likely lead to more civil unrest. Despite the warnings Jones has refused to cancel the protest set for Saturday at his Dove World Outreach Center, a church that espouses an anti-Islam philosophy saying,
“How much do we back down? How many times do we back down?.Instead of us backing down, maybe it’s to time to stand up. Maybe it’s time to send a message to radical Islam that we will not tolerate their behavior.”
