Inmates at Kansas Prison Take Over Cellular Block and Damage Property
Several inmates at a prison in Kansas City caused a commotion when they took over one of the cellular blocks, destroying property and setting off fire extinguishers in an incident that stretched from Thursday afternoon to early Friday morning, a corrections official said.
More than 50 inmates were involved initially when the disturbance started around 3 p.m. Thursday at Lansing Correctional Facility, but the situation was secured and accounted for by 1 a.m. Friday.
No injuries were reported, but details on how the incident ended were not clear. The inmates were confined to the cell house, and officials monitored the situation via video.
What led to the disturbance at the medium-security housing unit was also not clear, and investigation to determine the cause was ongoing.
Coronavirus cases had been diagnosed among inmates and staff at the facility and the entire prison was placed on restricted movement on Saturday.
