Impeachment Investigators Accuse Mike Pompeo of 'Intimidating Witnesses'

Congressional Democrats have accused State Secretary Mike Pompeo of ‘intimidating witnesses’ to protect himself and the president. This comes just a day after it emerged that Pompeo listened in on Trump’s call with Ukrainian president.

The heads of three congressional committees that are conducting impeachment inquiries into the Trump administration, on Tuesday, warned Pompeo against his “intimidating department witnesses.” The democratic Chairmen announced in a broader statement that the state secretary would be a witness in the ongoing investigation.

The inquiry focuses on whether the president, in his July phone call with the president of Ukraine, used his power for personal benefit. During the phone call, Trump pressed president Volodymyr Zelenskiy to open up investigations into the Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden and his son.

In the statement, the committee heads cited reports from Monday that the state secretary allegedly listened in on the call. They also hinted on other reports that Pompeo plans to prevent investigators from accessing American diplomats. “Blocking diplomats’ testimony before Congress amounts to a crime and “will constitute evidence of obstruction of the impeachment inquiry,” part of the statement read.
