Dr Anthony Fauci Says Millions of Americans Could Contract COVID-19, 200,000 Could Die
A federal infectious disease official issued a warning Sunday as the Navy hospital ship sailed for New York’s harbor and the US coronavirus death toll rose above 2,200.
The US death total had doubled in two days when Dr Anthony Fauci, a leading voice in the effort to curb the pandemic, stated that 100,000 to 200,000 Americans could die from the virus.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, citing extensive community transmission of Coronavirus in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, late Saturday urged the residents to refrain from non-essential travel for two weeks effective immediately. The advisory did not apply to employees of critical infrastructure industries like trucking, financial services, public health professionals, and food supply.
As of Sunday, the US had more than 125,000 cases of COVID-19 and over 2,200 deaths. More confirmations were expected as the US government ramped up testing.
