Christopher Columbus Statue Beheaded, Spray-painted, Set on Fire, Tossed into Lake

Two Christopher Columbus statues were vandalized Wednesday overnight in different cities as calls mounted for the contentious monuments to be taken down.

A statue was torn down in downtown’s Byrd Park in Virginia following a peaceful demonstration of indigenous people Tuesday night.

The protesters then spray-painted, set on fire, and tossed the statue into a lake. According to officials, a photographer was attacked after the protesters demanded him to leave the scene.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was planning to assess the historical meaning of Christopher Columbus in the city’s North End.

The statue, erected in the city in 1979, was beheaded overnight. The mayor said the statue would be removed and put in storage while crews assessed the damage.

Statues had been targeted by protesters in the US and around the world speaking out against police brutality.
