According to the Federal Aviation Administration, three people and a dog died in a small plane crash that happened Tuesday afternoon in Springfield, Illinois.

FAA said a two-engine Piper Aerostar crashed in a field in a residential area southeast of Springfield.

The plane had departed from Huntsville, Alabama, earlier in the day and was attempting to land at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport.

Authorities said the pilot had allegedly reported having trouble with the weather conditions and the plane’s instruments just before the crash while approaching Springfield.

The plane burst into flames upon impact, killing its three occupants and a dog.

Those killed in the crash are believed to be former Springfield Mayor Frank Edwards and his wife, and Sangamon County Coroner Cinda Edwards.

The FAA and the National Transport Safety Board are investigating the crash.
