Vh1 Top 100 Artists Of All Time – List of Greatest Artists Of All Time

Vh1: Top 100 Artists Of All Time list is a major source of controversy on the internet right now. Music fans around the globe can not agree on the list revealed by the TV network. One of the main problems with the list reportedly is the lack of female presence in the top end: Madonna is the only one who made the top 20.

Others consider that Hip-Hop artists are overly represented: 7 of them made the list including Jay-Z at #47 and LL Cool J # 92.

R&B artists like Usher and R. Kelly were completely left out despite their impressive catalogs of hits. Fans of Elvis Presley were displeased to find out that he was only listed # 8.

  1. I cannot believe some of the people that made this list and Britney Spears didn’t! She belongs up with Madonna. Seriously, this list is jacked.

    • All these hip hop artists suck how is tom petty in the company of justin timberlake and bands like radiohead shouldn’t even be on the list

    • Would really like to see who voted and/or how the list was compiled.Rap and Hip hop have been around for only about 20 years if that,so why such a high number of those acts? The Velvet Underground at #24?Rebels in the day,but they never had a chart hit (I am in my 50’s and was around back in the day).Without Alice Cooper leading the way,you would have no Kiss,no Black Sabbath(Ozzy)?

    • Why no Blondie?

They were the first band to make rap mainstream with rapture?

They also bridged punk and pop together. Had many #1 hits.

I’m sorry this list is not very credible with some of the obscure acts on it that should not be. Lame!~

    • Yeah, and where is The Partridge Family, and Bobby Sherman, and David Cassidy. Man, what a jacked list. Actually, it was very surprising to see artists like Sade and ABBA on this list. Nothing against them, but in the top 100 of all time?!! Lists like this do spark conversation, don’t they.

    • nicole is probably not old enough to know about all the great artists that came before Britney Spears….she is talented, but probably not “artisitic” enough to be on this exclusive list…(and i am surprised that madonna was so high up the list)

    • If you like Britney Spears and thinks she goes on this list, you are not a true music fan. Britney Spears music sucks. Madonna has been around for ages through 3 decades, that’s why she’s on this list. She def should not be in top 20, but Spears is a joke and so are you my friend.

  2. Look at the Top 5, all from the 1960 era of music, the best era for music as far as I am concerned. This was real music, not the likes of the Britney Spears and Madonna’s of music! Jimi Hendrix was undoubtly the best guitar master in his short life!

  3. Where are the Eagles? I could whine that Duran Duran, Crosby Stills & Nash, and Bon Jovi are missing, but no Eagles? You can’t tell me that the Beestie Boys, Def Leopard, Radio Head and Coldplay are more important. Please. Coldplay had three good songs, period. The Eagles are fundamental. Hotel California. Need I say more?

  4. You got the top 5 wrong. I just checked it against my recording and it’s:

    5. Bob Dylan
    4. Rolling Stones
    3. Led Zeppelin
    2. Michael Jackson
    1. The Beatles

  5. No Louis Armstrong? No Frank Sinatra? No Bing Crosby? Do you have to start performing music after 1950 to make the ALL-TIME list? No appreciation for what came before rock and roll.

  6. How the Hell Did Alice Cooper not make this list? Really he’s still rocking it at 63, is a great showman, he still packs in shows! If it wasn’t for him there would be no Kiss! I mean you have Hall and Oates, but no Alice, shame on you, and you had him commenting on the list shame shame shame on you!

  7. Micheal Jackson should be number not the Beatles. The reason why Elvis Presely and the Beatles sold over a billion copies worldwide is because they came between the 50s and 70s and back then it was still segregated the population of the world is their are more white or causian than any race of world. Elvis Presley and the Beatles are both white so none of their album sales would never suck. They were some very good other minority muscians but they albums wouldn’t sell that well compare to the beatles and elvis presely because their are not white. The whites use to hate blacks back then. Don’t get me wrong the Beatles and Elvis Presely are great artists and they influence Michael Jackson a little bit. But if they never existed, Michael Jackson still would because Michael was mainly influence by James Brown and the Temptations. I’m sure now that Michael sold over a billion too. Michael is the only artist became famous in music as a little kid, through out his teens and as a man. No artist have never done that. Michael still has the best selling album of all time Thriller the Beatles and Elvis Presely didn’t even came close to beating it. That was only Michael’s second album. Micheal change the game in his music and video. Michael really change modern music.Especially his video with not just performing but having a story behind it like a short film. Like I say The Beatles and Elvis Presely are incredible artists but Michael Jackson is and forever would the greatest music artist of all time.

  8. On what planet does Beyonce out rank Whitney Houston? Are you kidding me? Whitney has had her issues, but, she never dressed like a whore or shook her behind. You don’t have to do that when you actually have talent. Also, Michael Jackson should have been number one!. Even 28 years after its release, Thriller is still the best selling album of all time. Period! The Beatles were great, but, I have never seen grown men cry and faint over the Beatles. Also, where are the Temptations on this list? The Supremes, Luther Vandross? This is a horrible list!

  9. I think that its rediculous that Justin Timberlake even made the countdown. Usher is a better artist. I also dont understand how he would rank higher than Whitney Houston or any of the artists listed before him. Also in what world is Tupac Shakur ranked lower than The Notorious big? Tupac is known, loved and respected for his art all over the world. The Notorious Big is an American loved artist. The beatles and Michael Jackson are tough but we all know that both artists should be in the top two. Last but not least, every rocker who has done their homework understands and gives credit to Chuck Berry for pioneering What we now know as rock. He should have placed in Elvis’ spot and Elvis in his spot on the list.

  10. The list is pretty pathetic. Virtually no artist on the list, who were prominent prior to 1970. Where are all of the great country music stars? It appears the voters were mostly 45 years old or younger. This is a poor representation for an “all-time” list. It is weighted heavily in Hard Rock, Metal, Hip Hop and Rap. Is this representative of the best music and artist we can produce? Hope you can do better in the future.

  11. I think Bob Dylan and Elvis should’ve been flipped. Elvis’ contribution to music was greater than Bob Dylan’s. They both deserve top 10, but Elvis should be higher.

  12. What irked my husband and I was that they actually had younguns like the Hanson Brothers on the countdown giving their two cents. Please. I’m sorry, but we don’t give much credence to those who just don’t have the experience, weren’t there, have no clue, and really aren’t much themselves. Some of the picks were totally outrageous. What really got to us was where Elvis, the King himself, was in the lineup. He should have been #1. Michael Jackson was in #2 where he belonged. The Beatles, maybe #3 or 4, and then Led Zeppelin, where they were. For anyone to think that Britney Spears belonged on that list at all shows their age. The Who and Pink Floyd should have been much higher up than they were.

  13. Im so upset with this list I can barely right my comment. This list was so disrespectful and disgusting to the real artist that actually impacted the music world. Beyonce and Justin Timberlake should be no where near this list. Their music did not impact a generation or inspire and uplift millions of people. They are way too young in their careers to have been on this list. The list left out so many other great REAL artist that actually write their own music and play their own instruments. Also the order of the list was HORRENDOUS and absolutely RIDICULOUS. Justin Timberlake over Otis Rediing, Journey, The Pretenders and Hall & Oats. Its a joke. It just doesnt make any sense and their is no way “The WHO” should have been off the top ten. Im only 26 and I still listen to “Teenage Wasteland”. Prince could have been in another spot on the list. An what happened to Carol King and Carly Simon, Bonnie Rait, Cher and Dolly Parton they had just as an impact on the music industry as some of the men on the list that should not have be on their in the first place. I am so done with Vh1. They actually stood for something a long time ago. I also think that maybe when you have Mandy Moore, the Jonas Brothers, Lil Jon, Kelly Rowland, Chili and Adriene Bailon voting these are the results your going to get. Their not even real artist themselves! What a joke!!!!

  14. OK I have all kinds of problems with this list. Jay-Z ahead of Rage Against the machine,Outkast,Eminem and the Beastie Boys!? Beyonce ahead of Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey and Little Richard!? CHUCK BERRY at #25! Whys Exactly is Justin Timberlake on this list at all. Rolling Stones List was alot easier pill to swallow than this S#*!

  15. Can’t believe Prince is above Elvis. Personal preference aside, you just can’t say that a modern short-lived band ranks above a band that has proven their staying power and songwriting abilities for years. And…didn’t let drugs get in the way of maintaining their presence in pop music for many, many years. Yes, I’m talking about Nirvana being ranked above U2. I love Nirvana, but I know that they don’t outrank the likes of U2.

  16. terrible list plenty of reasons why here’s a few of them BB king Creedence theWho out of top ten elvis at8 smokie the temps john cougarmellonhead what about SRV + santana . the REAL list some that went on the list ! why not DAVID+DAVID VH1 is on my list of biggest dopes

  17. Female artists were definitely ripped off. How could Carly Simon, Diana Ross, and Brittany Spears not make the list? I’m not a fan of Brittany’s but excluding her seems wrong given her influence… if Justin Timberlake s 66th, how can she be off the list. And I agree that Elvis is too low. He and MJ are in a class by themselves in terms of solo artists– which brings me to another point– why compare bands with solo artists? To me that is comparing apples and oranges. At least the top of the list is right– The Beatles are the greatest band; MJ is the greatest solo artist.

  18. I don’t have a huge problem with the list overral, but I believe that MJ should’ve been number one because he had a more diverse fan base worldwide. I don’t no too many people who aren’t MJ fans, but I know lots of people who don’t really relate to the beatles

  19. don’t have a huge problem with the list overral, but I believe that MJ should’ve been number one because he had a more diverse fan base worldwide. I don’t know too many people who aren’t MJ fans, but I know lots of people who don’t really relate to the beatles

  20. The blues artist were left out. I would at least thrown Robert Johnson in there. So many artist have covered his songs like Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Eric Clapton (he made a whole album of Robert Johnson songs). If he influenced that many of our great artists, I think he a least deserves to be on the list somewhere.

  21. Britney Spears????
She isn’t even in the same conversation with Madonna (who does deserve to be higher on the list)

Try Eric Clapton not being on the list (cream doesn’t count)

Also, I’m not a huge country fan, but how can they call it the greatest of all time and only have Johnny Cash on the list from that genre?

  22. I think I’m going to be sick!! ABBA!!!!! Hall & Oates, OutKast Journey Radiohead Depeche Mode??? Coldplay George Michael????? They make the list but YES doesn’t. Obviously Rolling Stone Mag had a hand in this. Radiohead ahead of Metallica What the F is Radiohead.
    Totally bogus

  23. I totally agree about Britney, I mean come on, Justin Timberlake and not Britney….whatever.
I think the top three should always be in this order.
    1. Michael Jackson. World greatest entertainer
    2. Elvis Presley
    3. The Beatles
    4. Led Zepplin
    5. Rolling Stones
After that is don’t matter but you really need Britney.

  24. The Beatles really are iconic and still such legends 40 years after they disbanded. That shows how big an impact they made and still make in the music world. I doubt anyone could ever surpass them. Same goes for Elvis and I supose MJ. I’m not a fan of 4 out of the top 5 being more into heavy metal myself, but have to bow down to The Beatles. No doubt the MJ mental mob will be pissing about this but I reckon he’s lucky to be number 2. As far as legend status goes, he’s mainly remembered by the general public for the wrong reasons so to be number 2 is quite an achievement under the circumstances. No doubt the mob will piss on me for that but hey, I’m not a fan and can see in from a neutral position. I wonder if he were still around if this result would have been different? Would he have made the top 10 if he hadn’t died? Who knows, but I’m sure many will speculate and the mental mob will piss about that too.

  25. It’s a VH1 survey. Why be surprised? VH1 aka MTV Networks does not represent what the vast music-buying public want. VH1 repeatedly tell us what to buy with their “You Ought To Know” artists. And their “sheep” follow them and vote for these artists no matter what.

  26. Definitely, not all categories were represented… What happened to jazz? Does someone such as Wynton Marsalis ring the bell? Also, Whitney Houston should have been among the top 20…. And Michael? Number one of course!!! I guess this rating was simply based on personal preferences, not merit!!!

  27. this list is crap. Notorious B.I.G. but no Ice Cube? No Slick Rick? Justin Timberlake makes the list but not Paul Simon? No Sex Pistols? No Patti Smith? Lennon & McCartney but not George Harrison? Nirvana above MArvin Gaye? Where’s Etta James? Sam Cooke? Coldplay nd Jay-Z above Otis Redding?!!! Next year’s number 1 will probably be Lady Ka-ka. Ridiculous….So many bands that are so not deserving on this list…

  28. OMG!!! Britney should TOTALLY be in top 10. Maybe not above Beatles or Michael Jackson, but like, way above Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan. This is ALL TIME, right? Britney @ #3 for sure…

    • Are you f*cking joking?! britney spears is a no talent prop to the music world, the only people that like her are 15 yr old girls and horny guys. she shouldnt even be near this list.

  29. U2 and Pink floyd should have been at least in the top Tem….and it should be limited to Performers that wrote the majority of their own material.

  30. Hey, everyone from Ozzy to Lemmy to Prince and Michael Jackson claim they were influenced by the Beatles so I’m glad they were number one. MY FAVORITE GROUP! 🙂

  31. What happened to Paul Simon? The man’s music is extremely influential and timeless. James Taylor is another musician that tops some of “artists” listed. Many of the “artist” listed just scream and bang on musical instruments there is no art in that.

  32. Nirvana before Aerosmith and AC/DC??? Thats at least one of the disagreements i have with this list. Whoever made this has got to be on glue. And Kiss at 56?? Yeah…this is way wrong, sorry folks

  33. seems to me you must be dead or retired to be in top 10…must be why Elton John is only #28…because he is still out there filling stadiums after 40 years

  34. Can’t really argue on the top 10, BUT some others,
#26 Neil Young,# 29 Radiohead, and # 48 Rage against the Machine, should even be an honorable mention, nevermind on this list.

  35. where the hell is bjork? shes a fu*king genius!!! THE RAMONES!? pioneers of punk!! Dr. DRE?! green day should be up there too i think…the list keeps going, cant fit all these amazing artist in just 100

  36. Michael Jackson not #1! I think this list is pretty fair for the most part. I think four of the top five are interchangeable but the number one spot, make now mistakes about it goes to the King of Pop. I think even The Beatles would agree, Michael literally owns them!

    • I guarantee The Beatles were an influence on Michael Jackson…You are a straight up idiot for thinking that anyone besides those 4 men deserves to be #1.

  37. Love this list. but where are the Isley Brothers. They have to be up there in the 40’s. Songs like “Shout” alone shold put them on the list. They were and are simply transcendant.

  38. All I can say is holy lol @ at nicole. Britney Spears is terrible and not a talented vocalist in the least. Not to mention she has absolutely no idea how to write a song. None. She’s only famous because she applied sex appeal to mediocre pop songs written for her. End of story.

  39. Where in the hell is JANET JACKSON? One of the top recording female artist of ALL TIME and she was not on the list? This whole thing is a joke!!!! This is definitely an opinion based list and not factual. How many artist can say that had a number hit in four different decades? Get real and where is Usher? Total farce of a list!

    • OutKast could make my list if they keep it up. I agree, their list isn’t that great, but you wouldn’t make it any better with Dave Matthews or The Dead.

  40. This list is a joke and an embarrassment. Elvis not in the top 2. Most number 1’s and most records sold. It will be hard to take you people seriously in the future.

    • Most records sold goes to Micheal Jackson and most number 1’s go either to either the Beatles or Mariah Carey, can’t recall which one. And just to be controversial, Elvis owes his success to people like Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Ray Charles, whom he extensively covered and borrowed from.

        #1 The Beatles – 20
        #2 Mariah Carey – 18
        #3 Elvis – 17

Elvis was inspired by and was a fan of all of those greats you mentioned, but he doesn’t “owe” them his success. His voice/style was his own…

      • You have it backwards. Many artists today and in the past have been influenced by Elvis. Elvis did not copy anyone. He lead the way and opened rock and roll music to all races. John Lennon once said “before Elvis, there was nothing”. Bruce Sprinsteen once said “there are contenders and there are pretenders, but there is only 1 King”. Bob Dylan once said “the first time I saw Elvis,I felt artistic freedom”. No one under 60 can really appreciate what an impact Elvis had if they did not expereince it in 1956. He not changed music, but he changed culture. I am not knocking anyone on the list. However, there only 2 artists that should be in the top 2– Elvis and The Beatles.

  41. Where the hell is Tool or A Perfect Circle? I’m not saying that they should be #1 or anything but they are musical geniuses compared with some of the garbage on this list.

  42. Where is Roy Orbison? Without question this VH1 program is manipulated to serve special interest groups. During “A Black and White Night”, Roy Orbison has backup singers Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, K.D. Lang, and Jennifer Warnes. He also has Bruce Springsteen, J.D. Souther, T. Bone Burnett, and Elvis Costello playing in the “band”. That concert was worth watching! This top 100 program is slanted enough that watching it was a little disappointing.

  43. I know these are just opinionated folks.. but, Janet Jackson, Paul Simon (Simon & Garfunkel), and the Eagles should have been on this list.. that’s my opinion.. But, Beatles and M Jackson (1 -2) was my pick.. Elvis should have taken #3.. but, that’s my opinion…

  44. First off just because you the first to do something doesnt mean your the best ie the Beatles. They are average at best 37 number 1’s. Now where is George Strait the man has more number one hits than any other band, group or solo artist dead or alive. Where is Alabama and Garth Brooks on this list. This must be a joke put on by VH1

  45. How can you not put Queen at least in the #2 spot. They had the greatest rock singer and rock frontman of all time, all four members solely wrote top hits. RIP Freddie Mercury.

  46. This is pretty good list, but wow they are missing some true legends and pioneers. Here’s some to name of few:

Frank Sinatra (need I say more?)
Oasis (they dominated the 90’s and laid the groundwork for bands like Coldplay…)
Sublime (The pioneers of Ska music and yet another band that dominated the 90’s)
Rick James (so many hits, yet vh1 apparently missed this legend…)
And of course, like others have mentioned, not even a mention of Tool/APC or maynard james at all. I mean you wanna talk about true artist, Tool reinvented rock if you ask me. Those guys are incredible.

  47. Where are The Temptations, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight, Iron Maiden, The Sex Pistols, The Jackson 5, Frank Sinatra, BB King, The Eagles, Louis Armstrong, Daft Punk, Kraftwerk, Grandmaster Flash, Eric Clapton, Boyz II Men, Wendy Carlos, Lou Rawls, Oliver Cheatham, and Chaka Khan?

  48. Blink 182, Frank Sinatra, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Buddy Holly, The Eagles, The Temptations, The Isley Brothers, and the Sex Pistols should have made the list!!

    How did Biggie beat Tupac???

  49. Not having more country artists represented and so many hip-hop/rap singers smells a bit of reverse racism to me. An “all time list” should include ALL genres of music. Just how many records did Garth Brooks sell and how many artists did he influence in the late 1980s and early 90s to revive country music?

Vh1 should poll a more “diverse” segment of the population which includes the general public, older and newer artists to form a truer picture of what the “real” list should look like. Not this one.

    • I’m not a country music fan, but I do agree that the genre was completely shunned from this list. I don’t think it has anything to do with race though.

  50. There are some tragic omissions: None bigger than the Grateful Dead.
Also missing: The Eagles, The Bryds, Buffalo Springfield, Little Feat, Frank Zappa, Allman Bros, Muddy Waters, Clapton, Howlin’ Wolf & Santana to name but a few.
VH-1 & MTV- once again failing flat. Long live satellite radio!

  51. They got some of it right (the top 10), but there are glaring omissions-no Buddy Holly, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson (who Michael Jackson idolized and copied), Supremes, Grateful Dead. At least there is no Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga or Britney Spears on the list.

  52. Johnny Cash ??? New Order?? You put Timberlake on there c’mon yall you might as well have put the back street boys and 98 degrees on there also , Elvis definately top 5.. Notorious BIG should have not been a contender.. especially in front of the doors.

  53. How did The Who not make this list? Frank Sinatra? Neil Diamond? The Eagles? There are good artists on this list, but it is obviously lacking.

  54. honestly i feel that Eminem should definitely be a lot lower on the list. He has a flow that nobody can match, the largest variety of style and can leave you just saying “wow” at the end of any song and he just keeps on putting new material out and it never ceases to blow the minds of his audience.

  55. I don’t understand how Alicia Keys was even placed, when artist like Usher were left out!!! How is Justin Timberlake even on this list, I mean sure he’s great…but not of ALL TIME!!!!! And where is Janet Jackson? Surely they would mention her after working so hard to move out of the shadow of her older brother!

  56. No Simon and Garfunkel, The Eagles, REO Speedwagon, Jethro Tull, Styx, Barry Manilow, or The Monkees??

And Jimi Hendrix, Prince, James Brown in the top 10?? With Bob Marley at 11??

This list is a complete joke!

  57. Obviously, this list is somewhat silly. But, considering the “panel of experts”, you could say it was a little speculative to say the least.

Presley behind Prince…not even possible. Also, Paul Simon should be Top 25 and Sinatra in Top 10. At least Ozzie remembered the Beatles.

  58. Grateful Dead Paul Simon Eric Clapton BB King Dave Matthews Band Eagles Frank Sinatra Yes Jethro Tull
Mark Knopfler /Dire Straits Temptations Dianna Ross and the Supremes ??????????????????

(Prince #7 Hall and Oates Kiss Jay-Z Cheap Trick Justin Timberlake and Tupac Shakur LL COOL J NWA and Notorious BIG have no buisness on this list ). They all suck …. Everybody else has a right to be there

  59. I wonder how they tallied the votes? It should be done like voting for the Top 25 in sports…
Give certain points for each position:

With Jackson’s recent death and The Beatles recent re-releases and Rock Band edition, they are in the CURRENT public eye more. That said, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Led Zeppelin, Dylan, Hendrix, The Godfather of Soul…. they would tell you who is the ALL TIME greatest… and that would be Elvis Aaron Presley.

Except for maybe the Top 3… it’s hard to do. For at least the next 100 years, the top 3 are –
    01: Elvis
    02: The Beatles
    03: Led Zeppelin

My list would also include (While Vh1’s did not)-
    Neil Diamond
    The Eagles
    The Supremes
    Frank Sinatra
    Ben E. King
    Alice in Chains
    Simon & Garfunkel
    Sam Cooke
    Stone Temple Pilots
    Bobby Darin
    The Cult
    Ted Nugent
    Bo Diddley
My List would not include –
    Alicia Keys
    Justin Timberlake
    Depeche Mode
    Velvet Underground
    Green Day
    George Michael
    or Rage Against the Machine…
..if you don’t like it, make your own!
Aww heck…here’s my Tops 30 something-
    01: Elvis Presley

    09: Johnny Cash
    10: B.B. King
    11: Aretha Farnklin
    12: Otis Redding
    13: Neil Diamond

    • A thumb down? It’s my list. Make your own or at least explain your objection. I think my top 33 is quite nice. Don’t know if I’ll finish though.

    • Your list looks good for the first dozen – all great artists. But then it veers into nonsense: soundgarden at #17, many places ahead of queen and the rolling stones? that must be your personal taste, not an objective appraisal of the greatness of an artist and their impact on music. Try thinking of a history of rock music – would any historian spend more time discussing soundgarden than the rolling stones? Ridiculous.

      • That’s just it… at some point, anyone’s list is going to differ from anothers. I happen to like The Stones and Soundgarden, but I appreciate Soundgarden’s music much more.
Total objectivism is impossible in such a situation. You know that all kinds of things came into play when they asked these current “artists” for their opinion.

I don’t believe that music “historians” would really fair much better… unless they truly just went by sales and a clear vision of the overall impact on the music industry… in that case, I think my top 3 is dead on and numbers 4 through 15 hold up well.

All that really matters is #1… and by combined sales and impact… my #1 is correct. And it doesn’t really matter what everyone else says.
Have you ever tied to make a list that YOU could live with?

    • The Agent has it correct with the first 2. After Elvis and The Beatles, there is a dropoff. My top 5 are 1. Elvis 2. The Beatles 3. The Rolling Stones 4. James Brown 5. Michael Jackson. (And for a throw in) 6. Fats Domino. And as for VH1’s intelligence, placing Elvis number 8 would be like having a survey of the greatest race horses and placing Secretariat number 8.

  60. The beatles REALLY was these people on crack. MAraih Carey should’ve been in the TOP 20, she sold more ablums then Elvis.m How in the H### did Jaz Z is more influential then biggy and Tupac. Who the H### is Bob Doyle!!!!!!!!!!!!! RACIST LIST EVER!!!!!!!! Emenem should’ve in the top 30’s. (one of the best rappers of our time) WHERS THE LATINO’S!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where the F### is KANYE WEST. Everyone loves Beyonce, she should be above madonna Madonna sucks. OUTKAST should’ve been in the top 20’s, WAAAAAY Better then Coldplay. Alicia keys # 100 is stupid contagious. THAT PISSSSSSES ME OFF. SHe is WAAAAAY better than Justin Timberlake. Where is the Black eye Peas RACIST LIST EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  61. How is greenday on the list and linkin park isnt?? a 5 year old could play Green day music. Linkin park is geniuse with there music and creating new sounding stuff.

    • jay-z has endured longer than all those acts, and has consistently produced great music. if hip-hop act belongs in a top 100 artist list its jay-z. clearly you never listned to an album like reasonable doubt. it will put your opinion to shame.

    • agree. how do you not have miles davis? arguably the greatest horn player of all time. just plain stupid. not to mention no sinatra. if it wasnt for him, there never would have been half the people on this list.

  62. a couple of problems i have

    (83) Earth, Wind and Fire
    (82) Steely Dan

    seriously? thats a joke right??

    (72) Janis Joplin

    (49) Parliament-Funkadelic
    (48) Rage Against The Machine

if you dont see whats wrong with that theres somethin wrong with you

    (35) Johnny Cash

    easily top 20

    (19) U2

WHAT!!! they dont even belong in the top 50

so much more wrong with this list. hard for me to dispute the top 10, though i dont think dylan belongs in that top 3 spot. maybe top 10. id slip bowie into the top 5, but thats just me.

    • (49) Parliament-Funkadelic
      (48) Rage Against The Machine

If you dont see whats wrong with that theres somethin wrong with you

Why? Because an insanely talent artist is above another insanely talented artist?

  63. The top 10 isn’t too bad…I don’t think Dylan should be #3…he’s barely top 20 as far as I’m concerned. Elvis should be in the #3 spot…come on, he’s “The King”. What about Buddy Holly??? Radiohead is out of place as well…they are great, but ranked way too high…

  64. No offence to their fans, but how on earth did Alicia Keys and Mary J. Blige make the list of Top 100 Artist of all (flippin’) time?! Oh, that’s right…”celebrities” voted. Do they even BUY the music?! This list is utter CR@P! There are some deserving artists on this list, but it seems rather Grammy-like: pseudo-pop culture, suck-up waste. Here’s a better heading: 200 Voting Artists That Don’t Have A Clue.

    • they were totally different styles of music, so how could you say one was better than the other?? I think they are both great in there own respects

      • Agreed, but you have to give Wilson his due. Lennon has said that the inspiration that put the Beatles in the studio to do Sgt. Pepper was listening to Pet Sounds

  65. You’ve got to be joking!! Why is there no Paula Abdul, Kelly Clarkson, or Pet Shop boys on that list? Kelly Clarkson influenced a whole new generation being the original American Idol. Paula Abdul’s straight up, one of the greatest songs of all time. The Pet Shop boys and their dance music are gay gods.

Also, Cyndi Lauper, Ricky Martin, the Village People, Kim Carnes, Chic, the Capenters, Cher, Barbra Streisand, Juice Newton, Olivia Newton John, and Donna Summer all should be considered.

    • bah-hah-hah-
funniest joke on the whole topic!
As far as Babs goes, I concede that she should be on there even though I can’t stand her, she is, after all, one of the best selling artists of all time.

The list isn’t supposed to be about who you hear in the clubs you visit or the socio-political views you share with them.

  66. Overall not a bad list – I would agree with most of the top 10 although not necessarily the order. Two glaring omissions. Where are the Grateful Dead? And most important where is Buddy Holly? I love Prince but he shouldn’t be adhead of Elvis and Springsteen should have been in the top 10. Props for giving Marley and Hendrix their due.

  67. So I didn’t get to read every post that was ahead of me, but out of the many that I did read not a single person mentioned Robert Johnson. Yes, It does surprise me that he did not make the list but what is even more surprising is that no one that commented on this list mentioned the man that SOLD HIS SOUL TO THE DEVIL to be able to play great music. I would almost guarantee that if you asked the 100 artist on the list they would all have been inspired by Robert Johnson or they would have been inspired by an artist that was inspired by Robert Johnson.

    • I actually like Sublime, but don’t believe they belong in a top 100 of ALL TIME list. Maybe a top 300.

Alice in Chans is high on my list.

I know you didn’t mention them, but STP would be much higher on my list if their last album (2010 Self Titled) wasn’t almost entirely poopy. I mean if I wanted to listen to Bowie… I’d listen to Bowie and not Scott Weiland impersonating him!

  69. some serious problems with this list the people they left out grateful dead!!! Allman Brothers!!! Dr. Dre!!! Red HJot Chili peppers!!! and basically this list is whaaack

  70. The Beatles are clearly no1, but others that have to be in the top twenty are – Pink Floyd, The Who, Led Zepplin, The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, The Doors, The Supremes, The Eagles, Dire Staights, Aerosmith, Elton John, Elvis, Mariah Carey, Neil Diamond, Simon & Garfunkel, Reo Speedwagon, Jethro Tull, Rush, and Van Halen.

    Just my opinion.

    • In your dreams. The Beatles will always be no1. The ammount of quality music they put out, how many great albums, how popular their music continues to be.
The Beatles are easily the greatest band ever. Michael Jackson doesnt make my top 10.

      • Are you one of those crazy lefties who go around making everything about race? If not, you should have said, “Sick fairies shouldn’t be above rock gods.”

I think your comment is “phoney”. I mean come on… besides the obvious attempt at racism, who the heck believes there’s such thing as a “clean” rock god?

    • Dude are you on crack I mean really, Michael Jackson is good and all but he wouldn’t exist without The Beatles, they are the greatest, they revolutionized music, they were amazing, they inspred decades of music, and will always be the greatest.

    • Beatles #1. Jackson’s great but he doesn’t stack up against the Fab Four. But then again I don’t think anyone else does either.

  71. WTF??!!! – Am I missing something or is Eric Clapton not on the list as a solo artist??? You’re telling me F***ing Emenim is better than Clapton?? These people are on crack!

  72. Where the hell is bon jovi? And gwen stefani? No doubt? And answer me this, why in THE FUCK is prince ahead of U2? Correct me if I’m wrong, but is prince a great humanitarian who sings about real issues? No he sings about sex, vaginas and all sorts of dirty shit. Don’t get me wrong, I love prince but there’s no way he’s better than U2

  73. I cant believe beyonce and JUSTIN timberlake got ranked to be even on here!!! What a load of craap! and elvis is # 8?? The man who inspired john lennon and the beatles!!! really? Im happy to see greats like Aretha Franklin and ray charles ranked on here, but then I see fing Queen and Madonna ahead of them!!!! Madonna does NOT deserve a top 20 spot! this is coruption! and bob dylan is an important musician in MANY respects, but does he deserve to be # 3?? I would put him in the top 20 somewhere, Johnny Cash DEFINATLEY deserves to be ahead of him, with all do respect, because I am a Bob dylan fan. Michael Jackson is # 2? Oh HELL no, im sorry he’s good, but not THAT good. I would say the beatles make a good # 1, the only ranking I agree with.

  74. The most glaring omissions are: Buddy Holly; Smoky Robinson; Roy Orbison; The Grateful Dead…less glaring, but others that should be in the Top 40 are: Dion; Sam Cooke; Paul Simon; Stephen Stills; The Yardbirds.

The only explanation for all this is that there’s clearly a generational divide; I mean, all the younger artists (the ones who voted) are tuned in to all this, whereas the older ones are either taking a nap, walking their grand kids through a mall…or, they’re dead…and nobody knows it, so their grand kids are voting for them.

  75. ok they all ways dont put STYX on these things the first band to have 4 triple platinum records in a row not even the beatles did that but i willing to let that go. but not having FUC*ING FRANK SINATRA in top 20 or ever on the list on you fu*king kidding me vh1 most of lost there fu8king minds not even putting frank on the list i can understand no styx, jerry lee lewis, dean martin, roy orbison, even eric clapton, and hank williams jr but my god elvis at number 8 seriously

  76. Where were either The Eurythmics or Annie Lennox? Females were definitely not well represented and Lennox has one of the best voices around. This list is more than a little schizophrenic

  77. I think VH1 top 20 on the list is pretty accurate. The remainder of the list over time will change dramatically. However, Michael Jackson is my pick for the #1.

  78. Here are some more artists that got shafted:

Chicago, Yes, Bon Jovi, CCR, Bob Seger, The Eagles, Boston, Jethro Tull, Donna Summer, Roy Orbison, The Tempts, 4 Tops, Smokey and Miracles, Diana Ross and Supremes, Celine Dion, Garth Brooks, Deep Purple, Barry Manilow, Grateful Dead, ELO, Doobie Brothers, Motley Crue, Alice Cooper, Simon and Garfunkel, Mamas and Papas

  79. Velvet Underground – vastly overrated in this poll. Lou Reed was an original, but most people hardly know him.

I agree that Credence Clearwater Revival deserved a place here. How many garage bands and jukeboxes across america played their music? Countless.

  80. The Beatles deserve the top spot but honestly I was hopin MJ had got it… This is a man who’s music spanned 4-5 DECADES….and btw, why the phuck is motley crüe not on this list????

  81. Michael Jackson should never be ranked #1. He was a pedophile and a disgrace to his own race. He hated being black. Tried to surgically alter his appearance and lighten his skin with creams. Come on. He also was a drug addict who paid doctors to be pushers.

Michael Jackson sang about healing the world but couldn’t heal himself from dope, child molestation, and lies.

The Beetles and Elvis are in the top two, hands down.

    • Get the facts straight MJ was no pedophile. We are talking music here, not personal judgments about personalities and lives. Stay on topic. “A disgrace to his own race” – now you come on…

  82. Seriously, how can you have Peter Gabriel listed as a solo artist away from Genesis and not Clapton away from Cream. And how do Paul Simon with or with out Garfunkel and John Fogerty with or with out Creedence not make the list as two of the most prolific singer songwriters ever. I also don’t see how Crosby, Stills and Nash don’t make it and I won’t even get started on the Eagles. I’ll listen to any rational thoughts as to why the likes of the Bee Gees, Justin Timberlake, ABBA, Hall and Oates and the Beastie Boys should have made it over CS&N, Creedence, Eagles, Rod Stewart and Simon & Garfunkel.

  83. Too bad they polled people with NO musical credibility at all. Great example the kid who play fuckin HARRY POTTER???? why dont they go interview random fucking housewives because they hold about as much musical knowledege as all the clownssssss they asked

  84. Green day at 91??? And how did Elvis Costello beat them out? Alicia Keys at 100??? Mary J Blige at 80? And how did Eminem beat her out? And how did Prince beat out Stevie wonder? And where’s Offspring and Evanescence? Where’s Billy Idol and why is Johnny Cash at only 35? And how is Elvis Presley at 8? He should be in the top three at least! What’s wrong with these people??????

  85. How can Deep Purple not be on this list? I would like any of these idiots to put on Made in japan to name but a few of their great albums and tell me how black sabbath, judas priest, kiss and all the other Metal bands can possibly compare-ask them they’ll tell you and that goes for alot of the other groups as well…the doors number 65 -rock n’ roll owes jim morrison-yeah sade is better-what is she even doing sniffing this list-what drugs are you guys on.The Velvet Underground #24???–and i like them, I guess 1 great album and two mediocre at best offerings gets you to #24. If they had made 1 more great album I guess they would have been in the top 5. Groups like Cheap Trick I mean this is just a joke–I could write a book about this..but as usual you guys are afraid to put names that maybe not everyone has heard of or aren’t “radio friendly” These groups like def leppard, are so overrated–the people into them started listening to music in the 80’s when all the great groups of the 60’s and 70’s had split up…the def leppard’s of the world would have been laughed out of town in that era

  86. How about John mayer… i mean he shouldnt be way up there but he is one of the only artist out today that can take blues guitar and still have everyone listen to it, not to mention he is prob the best guitarist around

  87. There are so many people/groups that don’t belong anywhere near this list,( Justin Timberlake???? WTF!?!?!), yet they have higher positions than those that do. What a joke. No Buddy Holly! (that’s just awful!) No Grateful Dead! No Jaco, No Joni, Jefferson Airplane, Jethro Tull, Procol Harum, Al Kooper…. No…B.B. King, SRV, or…….JEFF BECK! Very sad. Your position for the Doors is a real insult. How about-Los Lobos (who wrote Robert Plant’s new hit song over 15 years ago. How about Joe Jackson and Marshall Crenshaw? This list is so superficial and hollow. Shame on you VH1. You cannot re-write real history. WE KNOW BETTER.

  88. At least you put The Band on there. Bur where are the BYRDS???? Without them, we wouldn’t have Beatles 65, Rubber Soul, and just about all the rest of their catalog.
    Real oversight…

  89. Okay- where’s Dave Matthews Band? Grateful Dead? How much these bands generated in revenue from their concerts? That should be worth something!

Why on earth did David Bowie beat out Pink Floyd, U2 and Madonna?

And WTF- ABBA ahead of Steely Dan?! Good lord…

  90. Where the f*ck are the sex pistols? or the Pixies. Pixies are the reason for Nirvana and nirvana is the reason for all rock music coming out now.

  91. I would really like to meet one person that would put Prince ahead of Elvis. Prince is by far the most overrated artist of all time.

  92. the only problem i have is that george strait or garth brooks werent even on the list, honestly u have to give credit when credit is due i mean how can garth brooks not even be on the list if he is for a fact the best selling artist in the u.s. and he is not on the list he must have done something right if he is but hes not one of the top 100 of all time, and besides of all the hits it is very rare to find someone who doesnt know the chorus and doesnt sing along to friend in low places

  93. why isnt george strait on the list, i mean of your going to have the king of rock and the king pop u have to have the king of country

  94. And last but not least an artist that should have been on the lists without a doubt is the gifted talented lyrical genius LAURYN HILL

  95. Wow this list is bull yes a lot of these artists belong on her but someshouldnt be ahead of others, and where the hell is ccr the allman brothers the eagles the steve miller band and the cranberries

  96. Where the FREAK is Linkin Park on this list! This peaople are definitely missin’ a lot of out-of-this world ROCK-ALTERNATIVE bands. And Eminem should have been top 10 most definitely!

    • A lot of one-hit wonders do not constitute great bands. no Alice In Chains (best grunge/hard rock band other than Nirvana), no Eagles, CCR, Allman Brothers, Pantera (who shaped the heavy metal scene of the 90’s if that counts for anything.)

  97. Where the FREAK is Linkin Park on this list! This people are definitely missin’ a lot of out-of-this world ROCK-ALTERNATIVE bands. And Eminem should have been top 10 most definitely!
D’Wayne Carter, Drake, John Legend, Maxwell, etc. should have been on the list as well.

      • I respect and enjoy most types of music. Linkin Park is top 100 w/o a doubt. They are more than awesome live. Also, Skynyrd should be top 20, Steve Miller Band, Eagles, AIC, Bad Company, and Frank Sinatra are no doubters. No Sinatra! What?

Anyway, Beyonce is #1, just kidding of course but she is an amazing woman.

Furthermore, personally, NWA is amazing and changed my countrified life back in the day.

No Dead! What? Widespread? Rage is excellent.

  98. It’s a shame that it has come down to this, but in light of the totally botched list that was put together, punishment is in order. All the guilty voters who somehow missed so many artists (Buddy Holly, Smoky Robinson, Sam Cooke, Robert Johnson, Paul Simon, Rod Stewart…to only name a few) should all be assembeled in a locked sound room, with their hands bound behind them and their mouths duct taped…then the full soundtrack to Oklahoma should be piped in, followed by Wayne Newton’s Holiday album, with a little bit of Paul Anka and Neil Sedaka thrown in for good measure.

  99. What about New Order or Joy Division? These guys influenced soooo much of the alternative scene, and their music is still in movies and tv. Also, I agree w/ Garth Brooks and even George Strait, even if I’m not a big country fan. The list is right for the most part, but some artists are wayyy too low for their influence and contribution to modern pop, rock, and hip hop.

  100. The top of this list is wrong. It should be 5) Bob Dylan 4) Rolling Stones 3)Led Zeppelin 2) Michael Jackson 1) The Beatles. At least that’s what it was on the television when they aired it.

  101. To the comments so far all I can say is that maybe those polled were given a list in which they chose from. I agree alot of Artist aren’t on here that should be. Alicia Keys, as talented as she is, can’t hold a stick to say Carol King for example & Justin should not be on the list at all. Those polled must’ve been young. The Top 5 certainly influenced music genres, esp. Michael & The Beatles; but look at 6-10. Those guys changed music.

  102. justin timberlake is 66 dis means he “better” 2pac really 2 pac com on man better yet he bettta dan llcooj 92, 86 N.W.A.
run dmc 76 n my home town fav outkast 95. so dis mean he was betta dan def jam. we not talkin bout nsync dis list is sayin justin timberlake is betta dan most of the best rappers of all time vh1 is trippin bad

  103. Wow! A lot of you people are gonna disagree but seeing Rage Against the Machine in the Top 50 was a pleasant surprise. But where the hell are Soundgarden, The Pixies, RHCP, The Sex Pistols, Maiden, The Eagles, and Alice In Chains!?

    • He had a few pop hits as a member of the Jackson 5.
Then he had Thriller – a great album – but other than that what did he do? Cut up his face, dye his skin, and sleep with young boys. He belongs at about #30.

  104. Should have included Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Sex Pistols. How can Buddy Holly not be on the list? He is the father of the rock band instrumentation! How in the world do you justify Sade and not have Cher or (I know you might gag) Karen Carpenter. You have to admit she had an AMAZING voice. Too bad she got saddled with her brother’s arrangements.

  105. They need to come up with a formula for this. I saw that Sisqo was on the voting panel. No offense but I dont think Mr. “Thong Song” has credentials to be voting. It should be based on billboard charts/cd sales/revolutionary change of music etc.
Elvis at number 8? That is just blasphemy. My biggest suprises were not seeing Paul Simon, and especially Garth Brooks. He is arguably the best country artist of all time. All I kept hearing was how (“Such Band” could ROCK!) what about ballad masters like Paul Simon? His lyrics are undeniably without equal. I give recognition to VH1 for the attempt and no one is arguing the merit of the number 1 spot, but come on…did I seriously see Justin Timberlake at 61? How do you rank Jay-Z above Run DMC when without their pioneering Jay-Z may not even be possible?

  106. Theres some glaring omissions from the list –
    Simon and Garfunkel
    The Eagles
    Bon Jovi
    Dire Staights
    Reo Speedwagon
    The Moody Blues
    The Grateful Dead
    Crosby, Stills, and Nash
    Creedance Clearwater
    The Supremes
    The Cars
    Jethro Tull
    Ten Years After
    The Monkees
    3 Dog Night
    The Grass Roots
    Barry Manilow
    Neil Diamond
    Phil Collins
    John Denver
    Janet Jackson
    Christina Aguilera

Whoever made the list was either lazy or incompetent – or both! lol

  107. dude , you really screwed the pooch on this one. Its not even close. You can take at least 30 of these the list right away , and move up and down a few on what is left over.
I cant even tell you how many you left off the list , if this is supposed to be a ALL TIME list. VH1 get your crap together man.

  108. how do they make these list for example on some of their other top 100’s lists someone like nas (even if you dont like rap had what they considered to be the best rap albums to come out in terms of alot of things but his rating in this list is way low but in all things couldve been much worse i mean out of all the musical genres how do you only comprise a list of 100 greats? but thats just me

  109. What, no Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus? Obviously a solid chunk of this list is based more on commercial success than actual musical talent. Justin Timberlake ahead of Eminem, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Death Cab For Cutie, and countless other bands? Come on…

    • The list is determined by other Artists and Critics. Based on Influence (Impact on Music and/or genre), Talent (lyrical, musical) and Originality (style musically, vocally, and looks wise). Commercial Success is a given.

I think Beasite Boys should of been Below Eminem they were the first white rappers and had cross over hits in rock/punk music.

Run DMC should listed around 48 and Jay-Z should be no lower than 75

Rush should of been lower down the list and Yes should of been on the list, they Pioneered Progressive rock and influenced a lot of bands of the 90s and today.

Beyoncé shouldn’t be 52, no lower than 75

Where are The Pixes? Replace Alica Keys with Alice Cooper (He Influenced all the “theatrical” bands)

  110. Why is AC/DC 23?? AC/DC should have been at least top 5 they have had so many great hits!!! and another problem is James Brown in the top 10 that aint right!! whoever made this list is terribly wrong!!!

  111. ok wats up with public enemy??? iggy and the stooges??? WTH?? alot of these crappy bands SUCK AC/DC #1!!! SO glad MJ wasmt #1 at least!!!

  112. Just givin a shout out to ELO because I loved them as a kid and they’ve gotten no love. Also, no matter who you have to displace, Skynyrd, AC/DC, Metallica, and Pink Floyd should each be higher. I can’t believe the Eagles and CCR aren’t on the list. I also agree that George Strait, Garth, and Hank Jr are artists to consider.

I also love Sinatra. Sinatra is the best that is not on the list.

  113. Pantera changed a lot of lives and were incredibly talented and I find it appauling that they aren’t in the top 50, let alone 100… rediculous

  114. What the F* this list sucks, Journey, Rush, Def Leppard, Judas Priest, that far back, and why the hell is Justin Timberlake even on there. This list is shameful. Who the F* voted on this, mental patients?

  115. i agree with the guy who said that Thriller was a great album and the only really “groundbreaking” thing that MJ did solo, as far as recording goes. because he’s now a deceased icon, people have forgotten that MJ went downhill after Thriller and released mediocre (Bad, Dangerous) or just plain crappy (HIStory, Invincible) albums. think about it, does anyone remember a hit single that MJ put out after “Black or White,” which came out 19 years ago? (unless you count the sappy R. Kelly-written ballad “You are not Alone”). people only remember stuff from Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad, which were all from well over 20 years ago. plus, MJ only released six, yes, only six, albums in his adult career, from 1979’s Off the Wall to 2001’s Invincible, and Thriller was the only real “amazing” album that he did in that time period. it seems like MJ had too long of a period for being known for his weirdness instead of his music. his last album (which was an overall disappointment) came out nine years ago, and throughout the mid and late 90s and 2000s he was more known for his bizarre behavior, molestation charges, and always-changing (as well as sometimes frightening) physical appearance. if he had been putting out more albums (and albums of good quality), and performing live more over the past 20 years, i could maybe see him deserving #2.

  116. I understand that any such list is bound to be limited to the tastes of those who sit in judgment. Though perhaps the category itself is vage. Greatest Artists of ALL Time… do we include Country, icons of 40’s,50’s and 60’s pop, jazz? It would seem, by wading through the list as presented, that rock n’ roll and its offshoots predominate. If the panel were then limited to rock, why are not All of rock’s subsets represented with equanimity? Noticeable to my eyes are alternative and progressive rock. Case in point – Yes. Yes pioneered progressive rock. Each band member’s musicianship was unparalled and together their stage performance was groundbreaking. Anyone remember their sonic soaring at Roosevelt Stadium or the intense intimacy of their concert at Seton Hall? I do think this band deserves recognition for their contribution to rock. Any musician who has listened to them has had to up the bar of their own performance. Although I could continue my rant with many other omissions, I will instead yield the soapbox to another of the many disgruntled readers of the above said ‘greatest’ list.

  117. i also think the list should be called something like “the top 100 rock n’ roll-related artists of the past 60 years,” just because so many groundbreaking artists of other genres and decades are missing. i also think Nirvana is a bit high at #14, considering that they were only really around for two or three years, had only two widely recognized albums, and didn’t have a sound or musical creativity that was innovative or incredibly amazing. but, i guess they’re that high because people still credit them as “the band that killed off the 80s hair metal bands and brought alternative rock completely into the mainstream” (and, of course, because Kurt Cobain is a dead icon too). in reality, hair metal was already dying in the early 90s, and record companies were already looking for bands with a different rock sound. Nirvana just came along at the right place at the right time. i’m also surprised that Rage is on the list. they were also only big for a short period of time, and they only put out like three albums. plus, the angry lyrics to every one of their songs was always based around the same theme. y’know, the ethnic culture of singer Zach De La Rocha and how his people were so mistreated in the past. i can’t think of a song of theirs that wasn’t about that topic.

  118. If a band is not in atleast on of its genre’s hall of fame then they sould atleast be kept out of the top 50. Not a huge Cash fan but even I know he shouldn’t be outside the top 15 or even top 10. And yes GNR had one good album 1, uno maybe 1.5 good albums for those who can listen to Use Your Illusion all the way through but for the love of all things holy can the world stop placing them in amongst the greatest of artists. And Black Sabbath is only one better. Who did vote for this?

  119. First of all, the title of this is ridiculously pompous and narrow-minded. Top 100 Artists of All Time? What they really mean is, Top 100 Musicians of the 20th and 21st Centuries. Beethoven, Mozart, Van Gogh, Monet should all be in the Top 100 Artists of All Time list. So should Picasso, Ansel Adams, Maynard Dixon, and many other artists of far more talent and influence than Hall & Oates!

But since VH1 pretentiously slanted the list the way they did, let’s check the weird logic of their presentation with a series of questions: No Clapton, Jeff Beck, ZZ Top, Boston or Poison? Whitney Houston outscores Johnny Cash? Velvet Underground scores higher than Chuck Berry? Give me a break! Where’s B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf, John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters?

Perhaps the only way to settle this would be for VH1 to do a Top 100 Greatest Artists of each decade. Or better yet, let their viewers cast their votes in an online poll!

    • The list just covers rock music and its associated styles.

If they were to include other types of 20th century music, then they obviously wouldn’t omit the jazz greats of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Charlie Parker, Herbie Hancock, Charles Mingus, Thelonius Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, and Jaco Pastorius… all geniuses who would be ranked highly.

    • The Beatles at #1 are a no brainer. They are bigger than pop artists, having become near mythology. NO Buddy Holly, however, is staggering!

  120. Yes i believe VH-1 slanted the polls just like the government does. Thers was no Bob Seager, Eagles, Muddy Waters BB King etc etc… they should let the people decide !!!!!!!!! Oh thats right it dosent sell !!

  121. I understand a list like this is hard to put together and you will NEVER get agreement by everyone – but bands/individuals like Yes, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Simon and Garfunkel, Paul Simon, The Eagles, CCR, ELO, Neil Diamond, The Turtles, The Lovin Spoonful, The Animals, The GrassRoots, Santana?

  122. Any list that includes Hall and Oates, Parliament-Funkadelic, George Michael and the Bee Gees but
omits the Allman Brothers Band can’t be taken seriously.

    What a total joke.

    • Don’t agree with you about the Bee Gees, love ’em or hate ’em…..they did write a large array of different styles of music. However, you are dead on about the Allman Brothers. Great, great band that should be easily on this list.

  123. who are the idiots that came up w/ this list, jay-z beat the doors, he doesn’t even write his own music, who left out iron maiden, the animals, dick dale, the ventures, jan and dean, but oh!! they did get beyonce, evlis was #8, dude, he’s the king of rock n roll, vh1 should be embarrassed of thier list and should apologize to all music fans

  124. I can’t believe these names were left out…
    Eric Clapton
    ZZ Top
    Bob Seger
    The Grateful Dead
    Dave Matthews Band
    Crosby Stills Nash & Young

…to make room for these HACKS…
    Alicia Keys
    The Band
    Al Green
    Beastie Boys
    Sly & The Family Stone
    Curtis Mayfield
    Mary J Blige

These artists are overrated to different degrees..
    Jimi Hendrix
    Marvin Gaye
    Bruce Springsteen
    The Velvet Underground
    Guns & Roses
    The Kinks
    Rage Against the Machine
    Joni Mitchell

    These artists are underrated..
    The Police
    Van Halen
    Ray Charles
    Peter Gabriel
    Johnny Cash
    Tom Petty
    Talking Heads
    The Doors
    Van Morrison
    Steely Dan

A scientifio poll of voters from demographic groups that are represented in equal proportions to the population will be the only way to really get to the bottom of this. The criteria also needs to be explained to the voters so they know what they are voting for (number of hits, body of work, influence on future artists, recording ability, live performance, songwriting vs. performing other composers’ work, innovation, etc).

    • you forgot. CCR (how the hell could you leave them out), Moody Blues, Dire Straits, Linda Ronstadt, The Animals, ELO, (I could EASILY list 50 more better than 75 of the 100 listed)

Obviously, whoever put this list together knows nothing about music & talent.

    • I agree that Springsteen, Guns and Roses, The Kinks, The Velvet Underground, and Rage Against the Machine are all definitely overrated, and Radiohead is so ridiculously overrated that it is actually comical.

I agree that Talking Heads are REALLY underrated, not to mention R.E.M., CSNY, The Doors, INXS, Ray Charles, Tom Petty, and Steely Dan.

And no offense, but if you actually believe that Marvin Gaye, Sly Stone and Curtis Mayfield are overrated, then you have virtually no understanding of soul music whatsoever. All three were absolute geniuses. In comparison, Parliament is just plain boring, and is basically just EXTREMELY watered-down Sly. I agree that Al Green is somewhat overrated… he had a great voice, but he didn’t have the same creative skill as a lot of these others.

Also, The Love Below by OutKast has got to be the most innovative album of r&b/soul/funk music since Michael Jackson and Prince’s heyday. In fact, I’d put it as probably the best album of the entire decade 2000-2009. It’s too bad that OutKast hasn’t done much else.

  125. This list is bs slipknot should be on list korn tool mama nd the papas
big pun fat Joe all left out to hype women beater eminem and garbage like the band
who ever came up with this list must have gotten alot of money to leave out more deserving artists

  126. You’ve got the king and the prince, but you forgot the queen: the queen of disco Donna Summer. I can’t beleive that Eagles and Chicago didn’t make it. Others worthy of the 100 are Santana, Buddy Holly, Diana Ross, Barbara Streisand, Barry Manilow, John Denver, Rick James. Possibilities are blondie, The Cars, Styx, Rod Stewart, The Go Go’s, New Kids on the Block, Pat Benetar, Lionel Richie, Olivia Newton John, ZZ Top, Cher, Alice Cooper, Boston, David Essex, Tool, CCR, Allman Bros Band, Doobie Bros, and Pointer Sisters. Maybe Police. All these artists were/are extremely innovative and blazed new territory.

  127. It’s crap – how can any list be complete without Eric Clapton. He put out hits for 50 years.
We could argue forever the merits of Beatles vs. Michael Jackson for number one . . . but NO Clapton at all? Crap, I tell ya, Crap.

  128. TOP 100 would be a sorry ranking. It must be generally placing them (by who knows what) and forgetting to place others (who know why). Never attempt to rank all the genres together as we all have differing opinions and taste!
This list will only be accurate if you take music’s earliest influential composers to today’s superstars (All-Time) and somewhat categorize them. (Time frame/Style)
Allow more of the list to be the style of music that has been around longest and paved most of the way.
    Rank by influence/inspiration -OR- innovation/consistency!
Too many hip-hop influences were listed only because today’s current Pop has become based off of it (25 years).

  129. Well, if all of these criteria listed here – prince would definatly belong to top 3

number of hits, body of work, influence on future artists, recording ability, voice skills, instrumental skills, dancing skills, live performance, songwriting vs. performing other composers’ work, co-operation with other artist, innovation, etc

  130. Umm, wow. The Doors and Green Day should be wayy in front of a lot of these fucking stupid ass artists. And the smashing pumpkins aren’t even on here WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THE PEOPLE THAT MADE THIS LIST.

      • Sex Pistols? I think they were fairly influential.
What about all of the MoTown greats like the Temptions and the Supremes or Smoky Robinson?
        It’s a retarded concept anyway.
        Paul Simon?
        Buddy Holly?
        The Eagles?
They freakin put George Michael and Hall & Oates on this list!!!!!!!!!

  131. this list is pure crap just like most of these are.top forty garbage.michael jackson ahead of bob dylan lol no allman brothers or traffic or steve winwood or grateful dead or santana the list goes on. while journey depeche mode justin timberlake, def leppard, abba make the list go figure must be a lot of people out there with worms in their ears.

  132. pink floyd…. 18? please they should be in at least the top ten! and in my opnion top five. they were so innovative for their time. and they were relevant for a long time. and dark side of the moon is one of the best albums of ALL TIME. and they made a rock and roll opera and movie in The Wall, which mas made before across the universe… and they also realsed plenty of other great albums such as meddle and wish you were here, to name a few. they did go through a nasty break up when roger left and ended up suing david for keeping the name pink floyd but none the less they were one of the most influential and innovative bands of their time. which was a great era in music and especially rock and roll.

    • i agree with many of you with the other problems with this list. but i just felt pink floyd should be rated much higher than they are. my main problem is the top twenty. i feel like this list wasnt well thought out at all

      • they could never beat the beatles. they still sound modern, and they’ve been around for over forty years. don’t get me wrong, dark side of the moon was spectacular. i just think that the beatles definitely earned that spot. i’m actually kinda shocked that slipknot didn’t make the list at all. if you look at they touring record, and where they tour, you would see just how well renowned they are. they’re third album definitely put them on the map

  133. What a joke!!! Elvis sold over a billion albums, nobody not even close, not the Beatles or Michael Jackson. He’s a member of all 4 music hall of fames. Pick any artist on the list and ask yourself if they could sing the wide arrary of music Elvis did with no help in technology like today. He’s been dead over 30 years and his music still sells just as good as top artists today. Think about this whether you are a fan or not: A 20 year career with:
150 different albums and singles that have been certified gold, platinum or multi-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), with more certifications expected as research into his past record sales continues and as current sales go on. Research is also underway to document his record sales achievements in other countries. It is estimated that 40% of Elvis’ total record sales have been outside the United States.
Elvis has had no less than 149 songs to appear on Billboard’s Hot 100 Pop Chart in America. Of these, 114 were in the top forty, 40 were in the top ten, and 18 went to number one. His number one singles spent a total of 80 weeks at number one. He has also had over 90 charted albums with ten of them reaching number one. These figures are only for the pop charts, and only in America. He was also a leading artist in the American country, R&B, and gospel fields, and his chart success in other countries was substantial. Nobody, Nobody, comes close, that’s why he’s called the King of Rock N Roll.

  134. I think this list isn’t all that correct. Mainly because somehow Vh1 probably slanted the poll and the people who vote for this are mainly teens-preteens who don’t know good artist if they bit them in the ass. They only know artist from MTV and VH1. Jay-z? Come on. Plus some artist on this are sadly underrated and deserve a better standing than Elvis at number 8. That’s completely crazy and obscene.

  135. I’m mad that Sinatra’s not on this list. No Temptations or the Supremes. Justine Timberlake and Beyonce? Give me some of that shit ya’ll smoking

  136. I started watching the series and then got bored after seeing the bee gees on the list. All I have to say is that the Dave Matthews band is the top selling performance bands in this century yet not on this list? No sense!

  137. Who are the idiots who put this list together ….where is 3 time hall of famer Eric Clapton at Sade is 50,,,,,and Clapton is nowhere ….its as joke

    • Sade is incredible… one of the best modern soul bands (except for that last album).

I like Clapton, but aside from his work with Cream, what all did he really do? Layla is painful to listen to, and considering how good some people seem to think he is, he really hasn’t put out much else worthy of note.

Great guitarist, but only a mediocre songwriter.

  138. reading all these comments i see this is a certain crowd , i probably think that this comment wouldn’t be posted , but if it does, poeple look at the work, natural talant and influence michael has on all of us,you all saying that he shouldn’t be number one is a shame.

  139. WTF? How about Sarah Maclachlan, Stevie Nicks and Frank Sinatra?? VH1 sucks!!!! and they put LL Cool J, Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z??? You’ve got to be kidding me!!!

  140. It seems that many of the people who are having problems with this list do not recognize the importance of r&b music. By their own admission the likes of Elvis, the Stones and the Beatles all had early influences from r&b music. There’s no denying that these artists should be here but so should Prince, Parliament-Funkadelic, Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield. I agree there are problems. Alicia Keys, Sade, Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake have no business being on the list. And I think it’s too early for Beyonce and Mary J Blige? Eric Clapton, Santana and Striesand should be on this list. Kiss, Hall and Oats, Journey, ABBA, Depeche Mode, LL Cool J, Run DMC… I don’t know.

  141. The most glaring omission from this list: Paul Simon.

He has created more innovative music than most of the artists on this list, and he has done so over FIVE DECADES (and I can’t think of anybody else who has put out truly good material covering more than 3 decades). Also, Simon is clearly one of the most amazing lyricists of all-time, perhaps the very best.

  142. The top 100 and no mention of the Grateful Dead? What a farce! I agree with a lot of the list but when the Dead are not even mentioned in a grouping of 100 artists occupied by other crap performers, it’s bull****!!! Many artists have been influenced by them. The Dead created they’re own style and musical genre and were THE touring jam-band to see live for 30 years. They played more live shows than any other band in history and ALWAYS packed the house, no matter how big it was – and many famous artists would go to see them live to learn how to play in concert! VH1….get it together!!

  143. It should be done on artist not how freaky you can look and how diferent you are with computer made sounds.Grateful Dead, Creedence, Janis joplin, Boston, Johnny Cash,Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, These are the real PERFORMERS, I think these people should actually go see the legends perform. Don’t waste your money on clowns like Kisha whose New Years Resolution was not be a douche bag? Real class white trash.

  144. Rage ? Prince? Mary Blige ? Justin Timberlake ? Alecia Keys? Outkast? Did you forget Milli Vanilli ? Groundbreaking stuff , true artists? Spare me. Get back to your roots , or at least to actual music writers, innovators, performers. How ’bout some substance, ahright ? Try again and make us ALL PROUD VH1. WE KNOW THE REAL ARTISTS and will pay homage without your blessings.

  145. The people decided this list long ago.
    As it stands now..

    1. The Beatles…(More record sales than any other artist)
    2. Elvis Presley…(Only the Beatles out sold him)
    3. Michael Jackson…(49 million less than Elvis and 90 million less than The Beatles)
    4. Madonna…(Actually this is almost a tie between Michael and Madonna..they each have roughly 150 million and change in sales.)
    5. Led Zeppelin…(A solid 5th place with 129 million in sales.)

If the people don’t like the music they don’t buy it…records sales prove who’s the better artists.
    Just my two cents!

  146. The Beatles at number one is a no brainer, Nobody can really argue with that. Then of course Michael Jackson at close second. I was a little angry with Elvis being behind Prince? What’s that about?! In my opinion the top ten should have went…
    1) The Beatles
    2) Elvis Presley
    3) Bob Dylan
    4) Michael Jackson
    5) Led Zeppelin
    6) Jimi Hendrix
    7) Bob Marley
    8) The Rolling Stones
    9) Stevie Wonder
    10) The Who

That sounds pretty damn nice to me.

    -All you need is love

  147. Ummm i believe we are missing one very important group COUTRY music hello…… i saw jonny cash but what about garth brooks, reba mcentire, dolly parton come on now this people sell more albums then half those people on that list. bunch of BS

  148. How Rod Stewart is not included in the top 100 artists is laughable. Rod does not limit himself to one style of music, and besides that unique voice, his phrasing and back-up music are beyond reproach.

  149. This top 100 from vh1 is a monstrous, insulting, baaad awful worst than a JOKE!!!!!!
If you’re naming a top 100 at least give it a time period, and consider the age of those selecting or voting in these eras.

  151. Whoever says Michael Jackson is overrated & should not be at #1 is/are the dumbest idiots on the planet.
Michael Jackson deserves to be #1 because he brought us so many things & miracles & he spent his entire life from age 5 in the music business.
The Beatles shouldn’t have won it. Don’t get me wrong, I like the Beatles, but Michael Jackson deserved 100x more than they did.
Because for 1 thing. Michael Jackson completely changed the face of music in the 1980’s.
He gave us the great thing we have today known as a MUSIC VIDEO. Before the late 1970’s. It would just be the artist singing their song. But Michael came up with this genius idea. About having this sort of, mini-movie. Like in Beat It, Thriller, Billie Jean & Smooth Criminal.
    It was genius.
2nd, here brought us some of the greatest dance moves we have to day.
    He populized the follwing.
Moonwalk, Robot, Egyptian, Electric Flow or whatever it is. ECT.
He can dance so good. Most people would vomit doing that many spins.
And last. He made us all realize that we are the world.
He cared so much about humanity. And donated almost every cent he had to helping everyone else.
He even wrote songs like Man In The Mirror & Heal The World to show how much he cared & Earth Song to show us how bad the earth is & that we can still fix it if we act immediatly. Michael is not only the King of Pop, he is the King of all music, & the King of Kings.
Love U Michael, U may now rest in peace. 1958-2009

    • The King of Kings? Dude put down the kool-aid.
The Beatles are clearly the top group of all time, and that wont change any time soon.

    • Yes Michael Jackson is great that is why he is number two, but just so you know, one of your main points is completely bogus. The Beatles were making music videos long before Michael was, they made movies based on entire albums and when they quit touring, whenever they released a single they aired it with a music video, see strawberry fields, hello good-bye, i am the walrus, etc. Before the Beatles, Elvis made entire movies, you can hardly say Michael was the first in that category.

      • yes, Michael Jackson was great, but i don’t think he’s deserving of the high #2 spot. he was more of an entertaining song-and-dance man than a musical artist. plus, people forget that he hadn’t really been performing for nearly 20 years. think about it, from 1995 to 2009 he put out only two albums, both of which sucked, and he never really performed much in that time period either. for an artist to be ranked that high, i think they should have contributed more to the music industry over the past 15 years of their life. why do you think he got a low #40 in Vh1’s 1998 ranking? it’s because he hadn’t nothing anything really remarkable since Thriller, or maybe Bad, which both came out in the 80s, a long time ago. plus, i don’t see how he “changed” music in the 80s because there were artists like Prince who were performing MJ’s style of music before Thriller came out. and there were other artists making music videos with story lines in the early 80s too. and there were other black artists, although not too many, who got MTV airplay before MJ. i don’t know why people say he was “the first.”

    • Didn’t think it was a Win / Lose thing. It is peoples collective opnions. The reason you are upset is because you think this is a competition. Get over it.

    • To me michael jackson possessed all what an artist should possess. He was a great song writter, good vocalist, good dancer, good stage artist as well as making some of the greatest music videos that the world will ever see such as thriller, bellie jean, earth song to cut the list shor.to summarise the story he is truelly the king of pop, rock and soul music,REST IN PEACE MICHAEL.

  152. i think they just put michael jackson on 2 cus he’s dead, i mean i think elvis should be 2, im not saying michael jackson wasnt good but still

  153. 1. Elvis shoul;d be #2 or 3
    2. Supremes and Temptations should be on list
    3. Linda Ronstadt
    4. what was the time cutoff? what about Sinatra? What about Patsy Cline?

  154. I believe that some of these people who thought up this list must have the musical taste of a wombat!!! The GOD of the Stratocaster was listed (James Marshall Hendrix) and right before him or even after him should’ve been the ONLY other man to play voodoo child as well or even better than J.M.H. That man would be the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan. I would also have to say that Micheal Jackson did deserve to be in the top 10,I liked the “Thriller” album for about 2 days, then I was sick of it.HE WAS A PEDOPHILE!! Plain & simple, why else was he moving to a arab state where it was just peachy to do those sort of things if you’ve got enough $ to pay off the local cops. Talented musician but someone who was just never comfortable in his own skin, most of my African-American friends totally agree that once he started sleeping in a oxygen tent & all the other weird things is where he went downhill. ANY man who even sleeps in the same room as a child that is not of his own blood is a FREAK!! It was the happiest day I’ve had in a long time the day I woke up & heard that he had gone on to the big Never never land in the sky, And let’s not forget about how badly he shafted Mr Paul McCartney, but Paul has to take some of the blame as well for selling it to him.

  155. the only thing i’m upset at, is the fact that Billy Joel is #51 and Beyonce is #52

does that anger anyone but me? i mean, think about it, what has beyonce done that was almost as good as billy joel? That’s one spot below the Piano Man. Billy joel’s been active since the 70s, he’s better live than he is on his CDs, and he’s had chart topping hits thruout the 70s, 80s, and 90s

and how is journey 96? you’re telling me LL Cool J is better than journey? beyonce is better than journey?

and how are the eagles not even listed? hotel california isn’t one of the most popular songs of all time?

Did they make this list using a carefully organized system, or did they just poll a buncha random people?

  156. The are actually replaying this list on VH1. Whoever came up with this list should be ashamed – the are either lazy or incompetent.

  157. this list is SO bad..jay z who should not even be on this list at 47 and journey at 96,Heart with ann wilson and her voice…not on the list…hmmm but the beasty boys are…wow
coldplay is REO speedwagon is not does not make any sense.
bob marley #11 and the eagles do not even make the list…please
the velvet underground??? and Rush doesn’t even make the list

  158. Why is Justin Timberlake ahead of Tupac. its not Tupacs fault he died. Also I thought Eminem should be in the top 20. Its a travesty that he is only 79. I could run down the list and automatically say most are not better than EM.

  159. I dont have an essay or any thinq but I did and still do have SELENA… I dont know I just thouqht she should of been up there some where D:

  160. I don’t see Chicago on the list so I know this list is BS.
    40 years & 25 albums and #1’s & countless top 40 hits.
The first sucsesfull band to meld brass with rock. I disagree with 30 of the picks. they shouldn’t even be on the list. Who are the expert voters? Dips__ts that’s who!

  161. The top musical “artists” of all time would definitley list “tool”…

Like them or not it’s hard to argue the fact.

    This is a pop chart.

  162. Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Bryan Adams, Heart, and the Allman Brothers are not on this list. This is ridiculous.

  163. How does Bon Jovi not make the top 100? Where is Sam Cooke? Smoky Robinson? Johnny Cash???? What the hell, how do you leave off Johnny Cash?

  164. The following artists should also be on here: John Fogerty or Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, and John Mellencamp. It’s not right they are omitted…

  165. Notable omissions, or should I say “criminal” omissions?:
Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band, John Fogerty/Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Mellencamp, Heart, Styx, and The J. Geils Band. These folks should be in the Top 100.

  166. No Red Hot Chili Peppers!? Really?? I’m not asking that they make the top 10, but that they don’t even make the list when they have over 30 hits, and have been around for 25 years, well that really sucks. Enough said.

  167. we’ve got Alicia Keys, Beyonce and f***ing LL Cool J but not IRON MAIDEN… VH1’s got to stop calling itself a music channel.

  168. That is one sad list.
But all such lists are pretty worthless as far as fans are concerned. So what is the value? If everyone’s PERSONAL lists of their top 100s could be combined mathematically, this would have value, but there is no real merit to the manner in which the artists are listed. Who cares what other celebrities think? It should be based on what ALL people together think, or based on how many records or how many plays their songs get. This kind of list has no usefulness to anyone.

  169. Sad, very sad. What were you smoking when you made up this list? Several well knowns missing. Several little knowns on the list when you put it in perspective of an “all time artist” list. I appreciate the effort to publish such a list open to so many opinions but really- you can do better than that.

  170. Let’s see, no Kansas or Yes, Rush was only 75 and Journey was 95??? Really??? Whitney (rehab) Houston, Sade and Eminem (I can’t believe this) were all ranked above. What dumb fu@k came up with this??? I will never watch a count down show again!!!! Thanks a lot vh1!!!
