Oakdale, California (February 11, 2020) – The driver of a pickup truck who struck and killed a pedestrian on Highway 120 in Oakland has been arrested on suspicion of DUI causing injury or death.

According to the California Highway Patrol, John Hughes of Newman was walking northbound on Highway 120 near Valley Home Road when he was hit by a Chevrolet pickup truck.

The authorities said the man was walking on the east side of the road and was hit by a car at about 6:45 p.m. February 10.

The pedestrian sustained serious injuries and the first responders performed CPR on him.

Hughes was later transported to Oak Valley Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.

28-year-old Matthew Keith later called the police after hearing about the incident. He told the police that he thought he hit an object.

Keith was arrested after the police determined that he had been driving under the influence.

No additional information was provided.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
