Several people including a 15-year-old were injured after a powerful earthquake hit north of Croatia’s capital, Zagreb, local news outlets reported.

GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences said the 5.3 magnitude earthquake had a depth of 10km (six miles) and was felt across the Western Balkans. A 5.1 magnitude aftershock was also reported.

Several buildings were damaged in the quake. Vehicles were also buried in the rubble. Firefighting and rescue operations are underway.

Croatia’s Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic called on the people to maintain social distance as the country tries to stem the spread of coronavirus. The country has since confirmed 206 cases of the virus and one death.
