Escondido, California – 33-year-old Diego Mateo, of Escondido, is the bicyclist who was killed in an Escondido crash Friday night at West Ninth Avenue and South Spruce Street, according to the authorities.

The accident involved a 2009 Nissan sedan and a bicycle and took place just after 7 p.m. March 26.

According to police, Mateo reportedly swerved in front of the Nissan for unknown reasons and was struck by the car.

The impact of the crash threw the man from his bike. He was found lying in the roadway, unconsciously and bleeding from his head.

Mateo was rushed to Palomar Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.

The woman driving the sedan stayed at the scene and was also taken to a hospital with possible injuries.

Further details on the accident were not available.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
