Casey Hargis Dies after College Area Multi-Vehicle Collision at 70th Street and El Cajon Boulevard

San Diego, California – Casey Diane Hargis, 22, has been identified by the medical examiner’s office as the victim of a deadly San Diego multi-vehicle collision that happened on Wednesday night at 70th Street and El Cajon Boulevard.

The incident took place at around 9:10 p.m. September 9.

According to the San Diego Police Department, a 63-year-old man was driving a 2016 Mercedes E400 eastbound on El Cajon Boulevard when he reportedly suffered an unspecified medical issue.

The Mercedes then ran a stop sign and crashed into a 2015 Ford Fusion that had stopped in the northbound turn lane to 70th Street.

Following the impact of the crash, both vehicles were pushed to the westbound lanes, colliding with three other vehicles, including a Nissan Rogue SUV, a BMW and a Honda Civic.

SDPD said the Ford burst into flames after the crash, and two women, both 22-year-old, were trapped inside. They were, however, pulled out by the witnesses before being rushed to the hospital with severe burns.

Authorities said both had second- and third-degree burns, and their conditions were critical. Hargis, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced deceased at the hospital several hours after the accident.

A 20-year-old woman who was driving the Nissan, the BMW driver, a 63-year-old man, and the Honda driver, sustained minor injuries and were all taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police said the Mercedes motorist was also taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries.

The intersection was shut down following the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
