Albuquerque Man Shot in Protest over Statue of Spanish Conquistador
A man was shot and injured Monday night after protesters, and armed individuals in Albuquerque clashed over a bronze statue of a Spanish conquistador.
According to officials, a group of protesters in New Mexico’s largest city attempted to bring down the statue of Juan de Onate when they were confronted by another group of armed men who gathered to protect it.
The armed group, which called itself the New Mexico Civil Guard, carried semi-automatic rifles.
Gunshots were fired during the clash, and one of the protesters calling for the statue’s removal was shot.
The protester was listed in critical but stable condition late Monday.
Authorities said that the individuals involved in the shooting were arrested, disarmed and taken into custody.
The FBI was assisting the local authorities in investigating the incident.
