Ex-Minneapolis Police Officer at Center of George Floyd’s Death Charged with Murder

Ex-Officer Derek Chauvin Charged with Murder in George Floyd Case

The former Minneapolis police officer who was shown on video kneeling on the neck of George Floyd was arrested Friday, according to the authorities.

Derek Chauvin, who was fired Tuesday along with three other officers involved in the detainment of Floyd, was arrested Friday and faced charges of 3rd-degree murder and manslaughter.

In an arrest videotaped by bystanders, Floyd was seen pleading “I can’t breathe,” as Chauvin kneeled on his neck for about eight minutes Monday night.

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman stated that he anticipated more charges to come, possibly against some of the other three officers.

Authorities were still investigating Floyd’s death.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called for charges to be filed swiftly against the officer who pinned Floyd under his knee.

The death of Floyd reinvigorated a public conversation on police brutality and protests around the US.
