George Floyd’s Death in Police Custody Triggers Deadly Protests in Minnesota

The Minneapolis mayor requested the Minnesota National Guard to move in after George Floyd’s death in custody of police triggered deadly protests Wednesday night.

The second night of demonstrations near the site of Floyd’s death started peacefully but became violent as the night went on. There was a fatal shooting near the site of the demonstrations, widespread looting, fires and the deployment of tear gas.

One person was in custody in the shooting death near the site of the protests. Officers responded to a report of a stabbing at 9:05 p.m. and found a man who was not breathing lying on the sidewalk, according to the authorities Thursday morning.

The victim who was not identified was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center, where it was discovered that they were shot.

Multiple fires were reported, and several businesses were looted during the protests.
