A Mexican journalist was killed by “an armed gang” in the country’s northern Sonora state, according to authorities.
The office of Sonora’s attorney general said a municipal police officer was also killed and another seriously wounded in the attack that happened in Ciudad Obregon.
Jorge Armenta was the director of digital media outlet Medios Obson and was under government protection. Sonora State Governor Claudia Pavlovich Arellano has since asked the prosecutors to immediately initiate investigations to establish and find those responsible for the reprehensible attack.
According to RSF, Armenta was the third reporter to be killed in 2020.
Violence linked to drug trafficking and political corruption is rampant in the country. Mexico ranks alongside war-torn Syria and Afghanistan as the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists, according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
