The Taliban has claimed responsibility for a deadly car bomb that killed at least five people in the eastern Afghan city of Gardez on Thursday.

The attack happened two days after at least 56 people were killed elsewhere in the city including women and newborn babies at a maternity clinic in Kabul.

“A car bomb explosion took place near a military court in Gardez city, which is a populated area. Dozens of civilians are feared to be dead and wounded,” the interior ministry said in a statement.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement the armed group was responsible for the deadly attack.

A truck packed with explosives detonated near a military court. Five people were killed and at least fourteen others wounded.

President Ashraf Ghani has condemned the attacks and ordered the military to switch to conduct an operation against the armed group.
