At least sixteen people were killed after a train ran over migrant workers who were sleeping on train tracks in India on Friday.
The officials said some of the workers were returning to their villages from India’s key cities after losing their jobs because of a nationwide lockdown imposed to contain the spread of coronavirus.
“They had been walking all night, they were exhausted and fell asleep on the tracks,” a police officer said.
The country’s railway ministry said the accident happened in Maharashtra state. The train driver said he tried to stop but could not avoid crashing into the pedestrians.
“I have just heard the sad news about laborers coming under the train, rescue work is underway,” the ministry said in a statement.
