California Police Hold Investigation after Viral Video Shows Deputy Punching Teen

Officer Seen Punching 14-year-old in Viral Video, Authorities Doing Investigation

A police officer in California was being investigated after he was seen punching a 14-year-old boy as he attempted to detain him in a video that went viral.

In a video posted on Twitter Tuesday, the officer was seen on top of the boy, pinning him down and punching him several times in the chest. Someone was heard in the background asking the officer to stop punching the boy.

According to the Rancho Cordova Police Department, the deputy was patrolling an area of the city after there were complaints of alcohol, tobacco, and drug sales to minors. In what he believed to be a hand-to-hand exchange between an adult and juvenile, the officer saw two people. He lost sight of the adult who left the area and attempted to detain the juvenile for further interrogation.

The Sacramento County Deputy Sheriff’s Association president Kevin Mickelson said that the deputy was not aware of the teen’s age at the time of the incident and suggested his failure to comply with orders prompted the altercation.
