Hundreds of Tunisian migrants who were stranded in Libya have crossed back into their country, Tunisia’s interior ministry and the International Organization for Migration said.

IOM’s chief of mission in Libya, Federico Soda, said the migrants forced their way across the border into Tunisia on Monday night. However, hundreds more are still stranded in war-torn Libya.

Libya has been home to thousands of Tunisian migrant workers. The two countries closed their borders last month in an effort to stop the spread of coronavirus.

According to a human rights activist in the region, approximately 1,300 Tunisians had gathered close to the Ras Jedir border post since the lockdown was imposed last month.
