Mississippi Sheriff’s Deputy Dies Shielding Wife during Tornado

A Mississippi couple died when a tornado ripped through their home on Easter, according to Lawrence County officials.

Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Ainsworth, 60, and his wife Paula, 55, perished Sunday in a deadly storm that ravaged some parts of the southern state.

Robert heroically left the world as he died shielding his wife during the tornado, officials said in a statement.

The deputy was a United States Maritime Corps veteran and had worked for a long time in the Lawrence County Sheriff’s office.

Paula had previously worked as a Lawrence County Justice Court docket Deputy Clerk and was currently working as a Justice Courtroom Deputy Clerk for the Walthall County Justice Court.

Mississippi’s death toll had risen to 11 early Monday, with several counties being affected following the storms.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves had declared a state of emergency over the weekend following the deadly storms.
