Prosecutors Accuse Film Producer Harvey Weinstein of New Sex Crime

Prosecutors in Los Angeles pressed a new sexual assault crime Friday against 68-year-old Harvey Weinstein. He was serving a 23-year prison sentence in New York for another charge.

According to LA officials, Weinstein received a new felony charge of sexual battery by restraint, stemming from an incident which took place at a hotel in Beverly Hills in May 2010.

Weinstein was already facing four other felony charges in Los Angeles at the time, including forcible rape, sexual penetration by use of force, sexual battery and forcible oral copulation.

Prosecutors also said that they would decline to proceed with the prosecution on behalf of two other women because the victims were refusing to testify.

Weinstein was found guilty of third-degree rape for an attack in a New York hotel and also guilty for a criminal sex act for forcing oral sex on a former production assistant, serving a total of 23 years in prison.

He was put in isolation at the Wende correctional facility in New York last month after testing positive for the novel coronavirus.

If convicted, Weinstein would have to serve up to 29 years in jail.
