Iran to Pardon 10,000 Prisoners Ahead of New Year Celebrations

Hundreds of Political Prisoners are Among those to be Released

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has announced plans to pardon more than 10,000 prisoners ahead of Iranian New Year celebrations.

Judiciary spokesman Gholamhossein Esmaili said those who will be pardoned will not return to jail. Political detainees and those with less than five-year jail sentences are among those who will be pardoned.

Iran had earlier announced plans to temporarily free about 85,000 in a bid to combat the spread of coronavirus.

A report submitted to the UN Human Rights Council in January indicated that Iran had more than 189,500 people in jail. Hundreds of inmates are those who were arrested during and after anti-government protests last year in November.
