Brazil Tracking Down Prisoners Who Escaped Jail amid Coronavirus Fears

The Authorities were Planning a Lockdown to Prevent Spread of the Virus to Jails

The police in Brazil have captured more than 500 prisoners who broke out of four jails on Monday.

The Sao Paulo Secretary of Penitentiary Administration said as many as 1,300 inmates escaped ahead of a planned lockdown of the facilities over coronavirus fears.

The authorities had planned to halt the day-release programme to prevent the inmates from picking up the disease while outside of the prison. The four prisons allow inmates to leave for work or study during the day and return to the facility at night.

The prison authority said the riots were immediately brought under control.
