British Actor Idris Elba Confirms that He Tested Positive for Novel Coronavirus

British actor Idris Elba said Monday that he tested positive for the new coronavirus, joining Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, as the first major celebrities to contract the spreading respiratory disease.

In a video shared to Twitter, Elba stated that it was on Friday when he learnt that he had been exposed to a person who had tested positive for the virus. He did not provide the identity of that person.

Elba had not exhibited any symptoms, but he immediately self-quarantined just after learning that he had been exposed.

In the video, Elba’s wife, Sabrina Dhowre, appeared alongside him. Elba said that she had not yet been tested, but she was doing well.

Elba’s announcement followed the halting of more movie productions around the world.

The actor ended the video with a plea for the public to come together. This comes as more than 179,000 cases and more than 7,000 deaths of novel coronavirus have been reported around the world.  In the US, at least 4,138 COVID-19 cases and 71 deaths had been confirmed in 49 states.
