West Virginia Man to Spend Life in Prison for Filming Infant Sex Abuse

Richard Smith II Convicted of Filming an Infant being Sexually Abused

A West Virginia man who was convicted of filming an infant being sexually abused will likely spend the rest of his life in prison.

Last month, Richard Smith II was convicted of 11 counts of first-degree sexual abuse, four counts of sexual assault and five counts of sexual abuse by a parent, guardian, custodian or person in a position of trust.

On Wednesday, the man was sentenced to serve between 205 and 775 years behind bars by Kanawha Circuit Judge Tera Salango.

Smith and his former girlfriend, Roseanna Thompson, were arrested and charged with recording Thompson’s granddaughter being abused three years before. The two were arrested after officers were tipped that Smith had child pornography at his home.

Smith refused to comment before he was handed the sentence.

Thompson’s trial is scheduled to happen in April.
