Suspect Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Santa Ana
An armed man was shot and killed by officers Sunday afternoon inside a church in Santa Ana, California, according to the Santa Ana Police Department.
Officers were flagged down at about 4:20 p.m. and told there was someone with a gun inside Immaculate Heart of Mary Church near McFadden Avenue and S. Center Street.
The officers responded to the scene and found a man inside the church who confronted them, and the shooting occurred.
The suspect ran with the gun and collapsed on a nearby street where he was pronounced dead.
At the time of the incident, only a small group of worshippers were inside the church, and there were no services in progress.
Police said witnesses reported that the man was distraught and possibly suicidal, and it didn’t appear he was planning a mass shooting.
