8 People Killed in Clashes in Southern Kazakhstan

The Cause of the Clashes was not Immediately Disclosed


At least eight people were killed in clashes in the Kordai district of Jambyl region of southern Kazakhstan on Friday.

Interior Minister Yerlan Turgumbayev said dozens of others were wounded in the clashes between the police and a crowd.

The unrest resulted in the arrest of forty-seven people and the confiscation of two shotguns. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said the police and the National Guard have already contained the situation.

Video footage showed groups of armed young men marching on village roads in a number of settlements in the Kordai district of Jambyl region.

Several buildings were set ablaze during the attacks.

The cause of the fighting was not immediately established.
