At Least 8 Killed in Alabama Dock Fire that also Destroyed 35 Boats

Alabama Firefighters say at Least 8 Killed after Fire Razed Boats on Tennessee River Dock

Alabama firefighters said at least eight people died and several others were hurt after dozens of boats caught fire Monday morning on a dock on Tennessee River in Scottsboro.

Scottsboro Fire Chief Gene Nicklaus said the fire broke at about 12:40 a.m.

About 35 vessels, including houseboats and pontoons, were destroyed by the fire. Authorities said some of the vessels were docked for recreation, and others were homes to the victims.

At least eight people who were reported missing were confirmed dead. At least seven others were pulled from the water and treated for minor injuries, mainly hypothermia from the cold water.

A team of divers was searching the waters for more victims.

Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and neighboring fire departments responded to the scene.
