Fresno, California (January 26, 2020) – A suspected DUI driver was killed in a collision that left four other people injured near Caruthers in Fresno County on at about 11:40 a.m. Friday, January 24.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Hector Cortes, 39, of Fresno, had been driving a truck when he collided with a 2018 Jeep Liberty at the intersection of Nebraska and Elm avenues.
The impact of the collision caused both cars to overturn.
Cortes, who is believed to have run a stop sign at the intersection, was killed in the accident.
The Jeep driver, 23-year-old George Gonzalez Jr., was seriously injured in the accident and was transported to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment.
A passenger in the Jeep, 23-year-old Melissa Sanchez, who was 29 weeks pregnant, was rushed to the hospital where she underwent c-section. Sadly, her baby died.
Two other passengers in the Jeep identified as 56-year-old Daniel Torres and 79-year-old Julie Torres were injured in the accident and were also rushed Community Regional Medical Center.
Although an investigation into the accident is ongoing, the police believe alcohol may have been a factor in the collision.
