Veteran New Jersey Cop Fatally Shoots Self after Car Crash in Matawan

Roselle Park Officer Fatally Shoots Himself while Emergency Crews Attempted to Free Him From Car Wreck

A Roselle Park Police officer shot himself and died over the weekend after he was involved in a car crash, and just before first responders could free him from the wreckage, authorities said.

39-year-old Edward Nortrup, a 13-year-veteran with the department, was driving in Matawan Sunday afternoon when he reportedly lost control of his car. He crashed into two parked vehicles before partially rolling over in front of the Matawan Municipal Community Center.

Nortrup got trapped inside the vehicle.

Emergency crews responded to the scene but left shortly to get equipment to help extricate him. At that moment, Nortrup removed a gun in his possession and fatally shot himself in the head.

The officer was recently working in the Detective Bureau. He was a father of a 15-month-old girl.

It remains unknown why the officer committed suicide.
